Horned Frog football head coach Gary Patterson chose the Tarrant Area Food Bank as the charity to receive a $10,000 donation as part of his 2009 Bobby Dodd National Coach of the Year Award honors.

Mary Kathryn Anderson, TAFB business development director, said the donation will benefit TAFB's BackPacks for Kids program. BackPacks for Kids is a weekend food program for school-aged children who are at high risk for hunger.

Students get TV experience

University students are now getting a chance to announce games for the nationally-ranked Horned Frog baseball team not only on the radio, but on television as well.

Chuck LaMendola, play-by-play announcer for the baseball team, said that because of the deal struck with The Mountain West Sports Network last fall to air student-produced sporting events, students are now getting television announcing experience for the first time. Students were able to call games on the radio in the past, he said.

Officials hire firm to study streetcar project

City of Fort Worth officials moved closer to finalizing a modern streetcar system with a unanimous vote to hire engineering and consulting firm HDR Inc. to begin developing phases one and two of a three-part plan, a city official said.

David Gaspers, a senior planner in the city's planning and development department, said the company will begin planning a recommended alignment route and developing a business plan for the streetcar system as early as next week.

Senior concert to debut Q&A session

The senior class of the School for Classical and Contemporary Dance will showcase its artistry to the public this week by featuring a new question and answer portion with the choreographers, a senior choreographer said.

Natalie Henry, a senior modern dance major, said that for the first time, all choreographers of the night will be available to answer questions from the audience about their pieces following the concert. She said the students and professors added this component as a way for choreographers to talk about their work.

University should be more prepared for weather emergencies

Texas and Oklahoma lead the country in tornado activity, so it would make sense that universities in those states have thorough emergency weather plans of which all students are aware.

Director of Housing and Residence Life Craig Allen said resident assistants are supposed to place magnets on every on-campus refrigerator with information about tornado safety. Though these magnets do include useful information, most are overlooked or simply ignored by students living on campus.

The university is preparing for this tornado season with informative magnets, but many on campus either don't have the magnets or haven't taken the time to read them, some students said.

Director of Housing and Residence Life Craig Allen said resident assistants put tornado safety magnets on every campus refrigerator at the beginning of each semester, but it's up to students to heed their warnings. The magnets define what constitutes a tornado warning versus a tornado watch and lists the best places to seek shelter.

Full-length feature films, videos for Coca-Cola and award-winning productions are normally things that describe a major production studio in Los Angeles or New York. However, in the case of Red Productions, they are the characteristics of a studio just minutes away from campus.

The award-winning Fort Worth video and film production company, started by 2004 university graduate Justin "Red" Sanders, is preparing to film its second feature length film in early May, Sanders wrote in an e-mail.

SGA reps condemn gossip website

The House of Student Representatives unanimously passed a resolution encouraging the administration to campaign against the gossip website CollegeACB.com.

The resolution came in response to encouragement from administrators who wanted the sensitive issue to be addressed in some way by the Student Government Association, Student Body President Marlon Figueroa said.



"I want SGA to be the first ones to take action and discourage the use of this website because it definitely goes against what our mission statement is and what our core values are," Figueroa said.
