Official: Kappa Sigma not involved in branding, still investigating individuals

The university has determined that the TCU chapter of Kappa Sigma fraternity was not involved in a Jan. 9 branding incident that reportedly occurred in Colorado, but individual students are still being investigated, a university official said Wednesday.

"The university has completed its investigation and found that the fraternity was not involved," said Don Mills, vice chancellor for Student Affairs said.

Pi Kappa Phi team wins annual Mardi Gras Mocktail

The university's chapter of Alpha Delta Pi sorority held its 10th annual Mardi Gras Mocktail Blend-Off on Wednesday in the Brown-Lupton University Union Auditorium.

The blend-off was originally designed to raise alcohol awareness and eventually became the main philanthropy event for Alpha Delta Pi. In the blend-off, teams from different campus organizations blend non-alcoholic beverages in a competition for the grand prize, which is donated by area businesses or organizations.

There's nothing wrong with being gay in the military. As long as no one finds out about it.

From the beginning of his campaign, President Barack Obama said he wanted to repeal the "don't ask, don't tell" policy that prevents openly gay men and women from serving in the U.S. military. During his first year in office, Obama did not to try to overturn the policy, but he renewed his call to repeal it during his Jan. 27 State of the Union address.



It's about time.

Refusal of federal money for education affects Texas schoolchildren

Gov. Rick Perry's decision not to compete for up to $700 million in federal money for education may be a move that will make Texas schoolchildren suffer, a university professor said.

James Riddlesperger, a political science professor, said Perry's decision will only put funding for Texas education further behind.



"That money will be spent," Riddlesperger said. "It's already been appropriated. It's going to be spent somewhere, and what that means in terms of Texas is it puts Texas even farther behind in the competition than they would be."

Student groups hold candlelight vigil for Haiti

The university might be far removed from the crisis in Haiti, but two student organizations are doing their part to encourage student involvement in the disaster relief efforts.

Members of Lambda Theta Phi Latin Fraternity Inc. and The Interested Ladies service group of Lambda Theta Alpha Latin Sorority Inc. will hold a candlelight prayer vigil for Haiti tonight on the steps of Sadler Hall.

Lady Frogs basketball head to Salt Lake City for Utes showdown

With a one-win lead in the Mountain West, the Lady Frogs head to Salt Lake City to face the University of Utah Utes.

TCU is currently on a 19-game home-win streak but lost their last road match to the University of New Mexico on Jan. 30.



Utah owns an 8-6 lead in the all-time series with the Frogs. TCU won their last two showdowns with the Utes including the Jan. 9 game in Daniel-Meyer Coliseum, which the Frogs won 62-41.

While Crayola might describe the color of his blazer as "Texas chestnut," the rich hue was not the only stand-out aspect of the mayor's appearance that day. A single golden Stock Show & Rodeo pin resting neatly on his left lapel seemed to sum up Moncrief in perfectly simple terms: "This Thing is Legendary."

Haiku contest provides awareness and attention to Purple Bike Program

If haiku writing is one of your skills, then your poem could decorate the fleet of purple bikes some students, faculty and staff ride around campus.

Keith Whitworth, director and coordinator of the Purple Bike Program, said he started a haiku contest for students and faculty to get recognition for their work with the bike program. He also said the poems would give back to the sponsors who donated bikes by bringing attention to the program and, consequently, to the sponsors.

As the journalism industry changes over time so does the need to prepare students for those changes, the Schieffer School of Journalism's namesake said at Tuesday's ribbon-cutting ceremony marking the renovation and expansion of Moudy Building South, home of the College of Communication.

Bob Schieffer, university alumnus and chief Washington correspondent for CBS News, said that as long as there's a need for accurate information, there will always be a need for trained journalists to provide the information.
