Court ruling on campaign ads opens door for abuse

Published Feb 9, 2010

Barack Obama is Muslim. Trust me. I should know. Sound familiar? Similar campaigns were run during the presidential campaign in an attempt to "otherize" the current president by relating him to extremist members of Islam. If this sounds ludicrous, maybe it won't if one considers the percentage of Americans who still believe this. According to USA Today, in April 2008, the number was 10 percent, with rural Americans nearing 20 percent. Little has been done to dispel this image and thus the falsehood surely still exists.

Official: Parking garage a possibility

Plans for a much sought-after parking garage on campus are ready to be approved this year, a university official said.

"I think the first phase of the master plan is generally considered five to six years, and I think there would be a parking garage in that first phase," Mills said.

Speaker: Kindness should begin before tragedy

Published Feb 9, 2010

The recent charity to the people of Haiti after the devastating earthquake was worthy of praise but did not outweigh 200 years of neglect, a speaker for the Ministers Week said.

The Rev. Sharon Watkins kicked off Ministers Week with the annual Wells Sermon at the University Christian Church on Monday night. She focused her sermon on overcoming individual allegiances to care for all humans as children of God.

"We need to see past our false divisions and care about all God's children, before the earthquake hits," Watkins said.

Beatings and profiling should not be part of police’s job description

Published Feb 5, 2010

I have the utmost respect for police officers and the job they do. It takes courage and guts to do their job. I just wanted to make that clear before starting.

Jordan Miles, an 18-year-old Pittsburgh resident and violist who attends the city's prestigious Creative and Performing Arts High School, was beaten by three plainclothes police officers because they thought he had a gun, according to an Associated Press wire report. It turns out it was only a bottle of Mountain Dew, according to the police affidavit.

Equestrian team defeats rival Aggies 5-3 at championship rematch

Published Feb 5, 2010

It came down to No. 8 TCU's final rider of the night, but junior Ashley Aikman edged out No. 3 Texas A&M's Randi Standley 71.25-70 in Horsemanship to give the Horned Frogs the go ahead point to defeat the Aggies 5-3 in a rematch of the 2009 Varsity Equestrian Western National Championship.

Had Aikman faltered during the last ride of the event, the match would have been tied 4-4 and the Aggies would have won the tiebreaker by bettering TCU's final raw score 570-565.5.

The No. 8 equestrian program will have a chance to get even with No. 3 Texas A&M under the limelight at the Fort Worth Stock Show and Rodeo Friday at 6 p.m.

The Aggies handed the then No. 2 seeded Horned Frogs a 7-1 loss last year to win the Varsity Equestrian Western National Championship - and the Horned Frogs are ready for a rematch.

Head coach Gary Reynolds said Friday's event will absolutely be a rivalry match, and that last year's championship loss was extra motivation in practice this week.
