Off-campus jurisdiction good for student safety

Published Feb 4, 2010

The recent branding incident involving Kappa Sigma members highlights an important issue beyond the obvious question of why anybody would do that. The incident has also led to discussion about whether the university has, or should have, the right to investigate situations like this that occur among its students while they are off campus.

The answer to whether or not the university has the right to exercise in loco parentis authority is actually very straightforward.

Supreme Court ruling misunderstood

I'd like to again respond to Michael Lauck's column, this time called "Corporations and unions should have voice heard through ads." Like FOX News, he seems to be light on facts and heavy on pointless rhetoric. At issue here is that he characterizes liberals as the ones trying to expand government to stomp on free speech. Yet he fails to see just how bipartisan this issue really is. John McCain, the Republican and conservative front runner for the presidential election of 2008, was one of the main authors of the McCain-Feingold Act.

Officials: Branding not common on campus

Published Feb 4, 2010

A person could use clothes hangers for many different things, the most obvious of which is to hang clothes.

Others have used these household items to recover hard-to-reach items, pick locks and roast marshmallows.

More still have had a clothes hanger TV antennae or used the hangers to prepare hot dogs around campfires.

And, as university students learned last week, some in fraternities have used wire hangers to char human flesh.

The baseball team could go farther than the football team

Published Feb 3, 2010

While the football team came one University of Texas point short of the BCS National Title game, Jim Schlossnagle was putting the final players in place to make another title run. The football team reached a level they hadn't competed at since the 1930s. The baseball team has a chance to make some history of its own this spring.

The Horned Frog baseball team will open the season at No. 11 in the Baseball America poll, but there are three reasons to believe the team has a better chance to end the year at No. 1 than football did.
