Cowboys stadium will improve local economy and team support

Published Aug 27, 2009

If you took Interstate 30 on your way back to the university for this fall semester, you may have noticed something that resembles a spacecraft in Arlington. The structure is no UFO but the new playground of Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones and his team. Despite much criticism about the cost of the behemoth in a poor economic climate, the stadium will end up paying for itself.

According to the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, the final cost of the stadium was about $1.15 billion. That's about the same as TCU tuition for the 2009-2010 academic year, at $28,250, for 40,708 students.

Palin should establish a more positive media image

Published Aug 27, 2009

When Sarah Palin became John McCain's running mate in the 2008 presidential election, I don't think she knew exactly what she was getting herself into.

With an all-American persona and little political experience, she suddenly became a prime media target. She went from a successful governor to Katie Couric's verbal punching bag and she hasn't necessarily done anything to prevent such treatment.

New tailgating plan will allow provided alcohol

Alcohol will return to tailgates on campus, but students will not be able to bring their own alcohol as it will be provided by a third-party alcohol provider, a university official said.

Kelsie Johnson, student body president, Lindsay Ray, Panhellenic Council president, and Evan Berlin, Interfraternity Council president, led the tailgate proposal, which recognized students' dissatisfaction with last year's alcohol ban for university-sponsored tailgates.

The propsal was approved in early June, Berlin said.

Students shouldn’t have to buy textbooks of published professors

Published Aug 26, 2009

It's that time of year again. Get ready to head into that beautiful corner property, plop down that shiny new student ID, silently apologize to your parents and limber up to get screwed to the wall by the university bookstore.

However, the bookstore is a necessary evil. Supply meets demand, and school is much tougher without books. As you read down your class list and your bag quickly fills, you may notice something interesting. Quite a few of your professors are published authors! So why, exactly, do they demand you purchase their book?

It's one thing to have potential. The volleyball team says it's a different thing to live up to that potential.

Prentice Lewis, who is entering her eighth season as head coach, said the word "potential" is the team's motto for the season.

"Everybody's always told us, 'You have so much potential,'" Lewis said. "I said, 'Well, that's just a big word.' You've got to prove potential."

With 11 returning letter winners and five returning starters, the team has plenty of potential to live up to this season.

Point: Vick should get another chance to resume career

Published Aug 26, 2009

When news broke that Michael Vick would serve the last two months of his 18-month prison term in his Virginia home for bankrolling a dog fighting ring, much of the nation was given a slap to the face to waken them to the most covered sports story of 2007.

Vick's 2009 story should be about redemption and forgiveness, even if it isn't fair to the dogs who suffered so much under Vick's watch.
