LLCs not conducive to campus unity

Published Apr 15, 2009

Please, will someone tell me again how the Living Learning Communities act to diversify and be inclusive at the same time?

Chancellor Victor Boschini's recent decision to reject the new LLCs will undoubtedly heighten the controversy that has gone nationwide in recent weeks. Discussions will inevitably revolve around how "Christian" Texas Christian University is and whether or not these communities will limit separation on campus or intensify it.

Staff demand for conflict resolution services jumps 25 percent

Published Apr 15, 2009

The number of formal complaints filed by faculty and staff to the conflict resolution section of Human Resources has increased by 25 percent this year, a university official said.

Shari Barnes, conflict resolution facilitator, said the number of complaints received rises every year but this year's 25 percent jump is the largest increase ever. It has been available to university staff members since October 2000 and to faculty members since May 2005, she said.

Barnes said she was initially surprised by the rise in complaints.

Neeley admissions system helpful to students

Published Apr 15, 2009

As a second semester sophomore, I was just accepted into the Neeley School of Business. I was ecstatic to receive my admissions e-mail over Spring Break. However, I found myself wondering about those who were given notice that their application had been denied.

As a freshman, I had the fortune to already know what I wanted to do and that Neeley was the school that could get me there, and so I applied and was accepted to TCU as a pre-business major.

Dean: Proposed overhaul of top 10 rule may widen applicant pool

Published Apr 15, 2009

Graduating in the top 10 percent of your high school class might not be a free ticket to the University of Texas at Austin anymore.

With the limitations from a bill in the works in the state legislature, a university official says there is a higher possibility that more top ranking high school graduates will apply to become a Frog instead of a Longhorn.

Ray Brown, dean of admissions, said the university will have to wait to see whether the bill will affect the makeup of TCU's applicant pool.

Football analysis: Tight end group has big shoes to fill

Published Apr 15, 2009

There's nothing like having a pass-catching, block-throwing, big man on your roster. Good tight ends can provide this dual threat on a play-by-play basis and are often underutilized in offenses at all levels of play.

The Frogs aren't known to completely ignore their tight ends in the passing attack, but it's unclear who will be filling the role in 2009.

Shae Reagan, the Frogs' primary tight end in 2008, is departing after several successful seasons with the team. Reagan accounted for 18 catches, 237 yards and one touchdown last season.

Phelan is asking for members to donate five to ten dollars and has already raised a little over $100, he said. Along with the money, the Web site's members plan on donating their own bats and pads, Phelan said.

Football analysis: Young leads group of unproven wideouts

Published Apr 14, 2009

Although not as formidable as their counterparts in the running attack, the Frogs' wide receivers proved they were a force to be reckoned with during the 2008 season.

The key member of the team's wide receiving corps in 2009 will be junior Jimmy Young. Young was far and away the Frogs' greatest threat through the air in 2008 when he caught 59 passes for 988 yards and five touchdowns. He had 667 more yards than the receiver with the second most yards.

Student proposal would return alcohol to tailgate

Published Apr 14, 2009

Students are working on proposing a modified format of the student tailgate that will effectively disperse cliques during the event and allow those of age to drink alcohol, an Interfraternity Council representative said.

Evan Berlin, Interfraternity Council president, said he and Student Body President Kelsie Johnson have worked with Panhellenic Council Representative Lindsay Ray to tout the Strategic Action Plan for Tailgating.

The proposal would place the tailgate near the Milton Daniel and Moncrief halls and the Brown-Lupton University Union, Johnson said.

Unfair restrictions prevent superstar from adopting

In an unfortunate turn of events, Madonna was denied her bid to adopt a Malawian girl, Mercy James, in a decision that she is appealing to the Malawi Supreme Court.

According to a Monday article from The Associated Press, the country's High Court ruled on April 3 that the 50-year-old singer had not met the requirement that prospective adoptive parents must complete before adopting. In the article, judge Esme Chombo cited a law that prospective adoptive parents must live in Malawi for 18 to 24 months so officials can determine their suitability.

Offense powers baseball team to fourth straight win

When baseball season began, the Horned Frogs and Texas Tech weren't scheduled to play each other. By the conclusion of Monday's game between the two teams, the Red Raiders were probably wishing it had stayed that way.

Fresh off a four-game road swing, the No. 16 Horned Frog baseball team toppled the Red Raiders 12-5 at Lupton Stadium on Monday before a crowd of 2,052.

The team improved its overall record to 23-10 with the win and remains in third place in the Mountain West Conference.

An undefeated trip to San Diego helped the No. 45-ranked Horned Frogs claim a share of their second straight Mountain West Conference regular-season championship.

The three-match road trip began Thursday when the Horned Frogs handed No. 41 New Mexico its first conference loss of the season with a 5-2 victory. The Lobos can still claim a share of the regular-season championship if they defeat San Diego State University at home April 21.
