‘Boy soldier’ shares childhood stories

From a background of war and torture, Ishmael Beah brought a message of hope and humanization to a crowd of almost 500 riveted listeners Thursday evening.

"Hope is a form of strength," he assured the audience in the Student Center Ballroom. "When you dehumanize somebody else, you reverse, and you dehumanize yourself."



The beaming 27-year-old Sierra Leone native with a stunning smile and earnest mien made a startling contrast to the tales he told of his life as a child soldier, killing and torturing rebels to ward off being killed and tortured himself.

About 1,300 Horned Frogs are scheduled to walk across the stage at this year's spring commencement, a university official said.


Margaret Kelly, executive director for community projects, said the spring commencement ceremony is broken up into two parts, a morning ceremony and an afternoon ceremony.


About 702 Horned Frogs will graduate at the morning ceremony where they will receive their degrees from the M.J. Neeley School of Business, College of Education, College of Science and Engineering or Master of Liberal Arts Program, Kelly said.

A big play requires big ideas.


Two freshman TCU students decided to put their big ideas into action in the form of an energy club.


Ken Morgan, director of operations at the TCU Energy Institute, said the idea for the club was brought to him by Ben Voigt, a freshman real estate and finance major, and Justin LaPoten, a freshman finance major.

"Times like those keep me coming back for more," he says.


Tony Burgess, the self-identified "uber-dork" of TCU, is a nationally known naturalist - an expert in the study and research of nature.


His students, however, simply call him a friend.

A broken gas line from a construction accident resulted in two separate evacuations from the Brown-Lupton Student Center and Reed Hall, and disrupted classes Wednesday.


Larry Markley, director of the Student Center, said he called the Physical Plant after staff members began to smell natural gas leaking into Suite 111 at the north end of the building.


"They (Physical Plant) came over and said that we needed to evacuate," Markley said. "It wasn't in the building, but some of the gas was leaking into the building."

After four days of training camp, TCU alumna Adrianne Ross is still competing to secure a regular season position on a WNBA team, the San Antonio Silver Stars.


Ross, who was a member of the TCU Lady Frogs for five years, was signed to a training camp contract with the Silver Stars, which started April 20.
