V-Day Campaign ends with ‘The Vagina Monologues’

Performances of the play "The Vagina Monologues" concluded the TCU V-Day Campaign to stop violence against women and girls, with a frank and emotional experience for viewers.

Eve Ensler's "The Vagina Monologues" featured a cast of women telling their own stories through a series of monologues. Each monologue was based on real interviews done by Ensler with a diverse group of women who shared their experiences of violence, abuse and sexuality.

Katie Caruso, a senior theater major and coordinator of the TCU V-Day Campaign, said the play invoked many different emotions.

Goodall: Hope, peace key to understanding nature

British primatologist Jane Goodall spoke to students at TCU and Fort Worth Country Day about the thread of peace, hope and harmony that humanity has with itself and nature in a private lecture on Monday.

TCU worked with Fort Worth Country Day School to co-sponsor Goodall's visit to Fort Worth. The lecture was part of a 10-week touring exhibit through the United States, hosted by the Jane Goodall Institute.

The lecture heavily focused on her personal history and environmental activism through the Roots & Shoots program and also spread a message of hope.

No. 6 TCU equestrian moved to 6-3 on the season Sunday after a 12-3-1 defeat of Delaware State at Gambler's Choice Equestrian Center.

"I was really pleased with how we did overall today," said head coach Gary Reynolds. "I can honestly say that we really functioned as a team today. Coach Huffman had the Hunt Seat team ready and they rocked. To be able to win 7-1 on the road is amazing. I was really proud of her and the entire Hunt Seat team. The Western team has worked really hard and came back this week and performed really well."

Matt Purke tossed six scoreless innings to hand Texas Tech an 8-1 loss Sunday afternoon at Dan Law Field. Aaron Schultz, Jason Coats and Brance Rivera homered for the Frogs who completed their first sweep of the season.

Matt Purke (2-0) was perfect through 4 2/3 innings before surrendering a base hit to Stephen Hagen. In total, he tossed six scoreless innings, giving up one hit, walking one and striking out six.

No. 8 TCU handed Texas Tech a 7-0 defeat Friday night in the series opener at Dan Law Field. The Horned Frogs scored seven times on 14 hits and got solid pitching from the duo of Kyle Winkler and Teddy Nowell. Jason Coats led the offensive charge with four hits and three RBIs.

Winkler (3-0) turned in his third straight dominating performance, holding the Red Raiders to just four hits in eight innings of work. He fanned nine and didn't walk a batter. Nowell pitched a perfect ninth inning with two strikeouts.

Fort Worth takes part in statewide effort to arrest people with outstanding warrants

Fort Worth will be part of a statewide effort to arrest people with outstanding warrants from unpaid speeding tickets and other violations starting this weekend, according to a press release from the City of Fort Worth. However parking violations issued by campus police would not be included in the effort, said TCU Police Lt. Ramiro Abad.

The Great Texas Warrant Roundup will be from March 5-12, according to the release. The release also noted law enforcement officials will increase their efforts to find and apprehend people who have warrants.

Self-injury videos have no place on YouTube

YouTube is home to every great viral video, like "The Bed Intruder," "Star Wars Kid," and "David After Dentist." But besides these hilarious "videos du jour," YouTube contains a dark subculture of videos depicting self-injury.

In a recent study published in the journal Pediatrics, researchers studied the 100 most-viewed videos that appear when one searches "self-harm" and "self-injury." With more than 2 million views, on average, almost every video had explicit pictures of injuries, most commonly cutting.

TCU track & field athletes compete to qualify for NCAA Indoor Championships

Four of TCU's track & field athletes will travel to Blacksburg, Va., this weekend to compete at the Virginia Tech Final Qualifier. The meet is an opportunity to qualify for the NCAA Indoor Championships in College Station next weekend.

On the women's side, senior sprinter Kristal Juarez and sophomore Kelsey Samuels will represent the Frogs, while senior Mychal Dungey and junior Cameron Parker will represent the men's squad.

The job market is thin for new graduates 8212; we know that, but some college graduates are making the best of it and are giving back at the same time.

In 2009, there was a distinct upturn in students working in the private sector for nonprofit organizations, according to a Wednesday article in The New York Times. Students who were unable to find jobs in the traditional sector were finding out that their desire to give back to the community along with their degrees were very marketable to nonprofit organizations.
