Football: Kicker takes on extra duties

It was a period of adjustment this off-season for the special teams unit as new roles and rules had to be addressed.The graduation of kicker Peter LoCoco has forced junior kicker Chris Manfredini to take over the full-time kicking duties - a role he was not accustomed to last season.

Although Manfredini enjoyed great success last year as the primary kicker, hitting 12 of 14 field goal attempts, including a memorable four-field goal game against Texas Tech, he only hit one field goal between 40 and 49 yards.

Dean makes plans for new AddRan building

The dean of AddRan College of Humanities and Social Sciences said he will rely on his prior experiences when working to raise funds for a new facility for the college. Dean Andrew Schoolmaster, who served as dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at Eastern Kentucky University before coming to TCU, said the placement, cost and estimated completion date for the new building will be decided later.

Jodi Campbell, associate professor of history, said the department is in need of a new building.

The Horned Frogs' defensive line hits hard and the nation knows it.The line returns two of its most dominating players in senior defensive ends Tommy Blake and Chase Ortiz.

Both Blake and Ortiz have been named to the All-Mountain West Conference team two years in a row, and combined for 27.5 tackles for loss in 2006.

The line also features defensive tackles Cody Moore, a junior, and Kelly Griffin, who will become the first true freshman to start the first game of the season for head coach Gary Patterson.

Football alumnus gets seven years for drug charges

A former Frogs football team captain has been sentenced to seven years in prison. LaMarcus McDonald, 26, plead guilty in court Tuesday to possession with intent to deliver crack cocaine, said Ellen Watson, spokesman for the 19th state District Court in Waco.

According to an Aug. 29 Waco Tribune-Herald article, McDonald was pulled over for an expired auto registration and the police found 11 "rocks" of crack cocaine worth about $220 in an aspirin container as well as a gun found under the seat.

How old is your body?A new addition to the University Recreation Center, the Polar Body Age System, can answer that question and improve TCU's overall health and fitness, said Stacy Cintron, assistant director of campus recreation fitness and wellness. She introduced this system to help students and faculty practice healthy, active lifestyles. The system uses various tools to calculate an actual age of how old you are and devise personal exercise plans to reach your desired fitness level.

The Horned Frog offensive line took a major hit during the preseason with the loss of a senior, but the group is coming together to replace him."It was a big loss losing (Wade) Sisk," head coach Gary Patterson said of senior, who tore his ACL during the preseason and is out for the year.

Sisk started all 13 games last season and recorded 38 knockdown blocks last season, good for third on the team.

Because of the injury, the Frogs will have to find someone to fill the gap on the left side of the quarterback.

Eat your vegetables or no dessert. This is a phrase no child wants to hear. Kids basically have no control over what they eat. Parents buy and prepare the food, and the children have to gulp down whatever appears on their plate. If they do not like what it is, they squirm in their chairs praying that somehow that disgusting pile of green will magically disappear. TCU's nutrition counselor Stephanie Dickerson said, "students are like kids in a candy store," once they get into college, they embrace their newfound freedom and make poor eating choices, she said.

Even though the Horned Frogs take on the Baylor Bears in Saturday's season opener, the buzz around campus has been about the team's trip to Austin to face the University of Texas Longhorns. But for most students, they'll have to be satisfied with watching the game outside of the stadium or from the comfort of home. Due to the large demand for tickets and the limited supply of tickets given to TCU, a lottery was organized to determine which students would receive a ticket to the game.
