Four TCU golfers and one TCU alumnus failed to make the cut Tuesday at the 105th U.S. Amateur Championship at the Merion Golf Club in Ardmore, Pa. Two freshmen, Jon McLean and Jesse Speirs, and two sophomores, Franklin Corpening and James Sacheck, made up the TCU-record four qualifiers. 2005 graduate J.J. Killeen also qualified for the tournament.

Head men's golf coach Bill Montigel said his golfers played well in a field that included the world's best amateurs.

A Battle TCU lost.The top recruit for 2003, quarterback James Battle, is now a Lumberjack. Battle will continue his collegiate football career at Stephen F. Austin in Nacogdoches.

"TCU just wasn't the spot for me," Battle said.

He said he felt he could not be himself at TCU.

"Whenever I would bring my family and friends to visit," Battle said, "they could always notice that I was different from how they remembered me in the past."

TCU pitcher Lance Broadway was recognized as the 2004-05 Conference USA Male Athlete of the Year for his performance on the mound during his junior season. Broadway led the nation in wins with 15, posted a 1.62 ERA, struck out 151 batters and walked 35 in 117 innings last spring. He finished 9-0 with a 1.66 ERA in 10 C-USA starts.

Broadway received recognition as a first or second-team All-American by numerous baseball organizations and publications.

The Mountain West Conference reached an agreement with the Pioneer PureVision Las Vegas Bowl to send the league's top team to the game for the 2006-09 seasons. The bowl will continue to pair the MWC with the Pacific-10 Conference and will have a payout of at least $1 million.

The game's executive director, Tina Kunzer-Murphy, said the agreement with the MWC will increase the prominence of the Pioneer PureVision Las Vegas Bowl.

TCU has until the end of the week to respond to a lawsuit recently filed by an award-winning athlete and former student, according to the Tarrant County District Clerk's Office.In the lawsuit, Jacob Hernandez alleges TCU violated its own policy by denying his request to transfer to the University of Texas Track and Field program.

Hernandez filed the lawsuit Aug. 2, and TCU, the defendant, has 20 days after the first Monday the lawsuit was filed to respond, according to the clerk's office.

Conference USA named women's basketball forward Sandora Irvin 2004-05 Female Athlete of the Year for her work during her senior season. Irvin led the Frogs to their second C-USA Tournament title in three years, was named to the conference's All-Decade team, made her second consecutive C-USA first team and won the league's Defensive Player of the Year award for the third straight season.

She finished the 2004-05 season averaging 19.9 points, 11.8 rebounds, 4.5 blocks, 2.1 assists and 2.5 steals per game.
