Big cat sanctuary gives interns unique experience

Approximately 60 miles from campus a big cat sanctuary affords interns the opportunity to get up close and personal with lions, tigers, cougars, and leopards.

The Center for Animal Research and Education (CARE) rescues and rehabilitates sick, injured, and abused big cats.

The Center's interns, who live on site, work full time for four to six months and provide all aspects of care for the cats.

New sushi joint opens under GrandMarc

TCU students can now grab sushi within walking distance of campus at HammerHead, a new sushi restaurant and bar under The GrandMarc.

HammerHead, which opened Jan. 19, is a semi-casual Japanese-styled sushi bar founded by the same owners of The Aardvark, located on Berry Street.

Owner Danny Weaver could not be reached for comment, but event coordinator and bar manager Joe Ramirez said Weaver is a sushi fan.

"It's probably his favorite food. I remember he said ten years ago "I'm going to open a sushi restaurant', and here it is," Ramirez said.

Halperin appears on American Idol

If students tuned in to "American Idol" on Thursday, they may have recognized a familiar face.

TCU 2010 graduate Tim Halperin made an appearance as a contestant on the show's tenth season.

In front of millions of viewers, Halperin earned his golden ticket to Hollywood last week. Now he is officially in the running to be the next American Idol, said Chancellor's Associate for External Affairs Ann Louden.

Lady Frogs defeat San Diego State University

The Lady Frogs snapped a two-game losing streak Saturday afternoon with a 63-52 win over San Diego State University at Daniel-Meyer Coliseum.

TCU used a 21-2 first half run to jump out to a lead and never looked back in the second half.

The Aztecs had no way of stopping sophomore forward Delisa Gross, who went 7-of-7 from the field and scored a career-high 20 points in the win.

Lady Frogs' head basketball coach Jeff Mittie said, in a press conference, Gross had better aggressiveness and played with balance on the court.

More ice expected Wednesday

More winter weather is in the forecast for the Dallas/Fort Worth area this week. After almost a week of snow and ice on the ground in North Texas, ice accumulation is expected once again this Wednesday.

According to meteorologist Amber Elliott with the National Weather Service in Fort Worth, precipitation should start late Tuesday evening and start to freeze when the cold air rolls in around midnight Tuesday.

Time off should be used wisely

After a week of winter weather that caused four days of canceled classes, the university is almost back to normal.

Missing four days in a semester that only has 70 days of normal class time is a lot, but the cancellations were unavoidable. Student, faculty and staff safety should be the most important consideration when determining whether to keep the university open, and in this case it looks like the university made the right call.

The TCU computer mainframe located in the Sid W. Richardson Building was affected by a burst pipe in the building's basement Thursday morning due to freezing temperatures, resulting in outages in the university's technological services such as my.tcu.edu, TCU e-mail accounts, servers and the main TCU website.

With eight inches of water under the floorboards where the electrical wires are located, Josh Harmon, director of enterprise application services, said it was surprising the server was recovered by Saturday morning.

The Super Bowl brought national attention to the Dallas-Fort Worth area. TCU students have geared up for a weekend of cold excitement and football. The university sent even sent out a crime tips e-mail warning students about pickpockets and drunk driving.

However, there has been no mention or awareness on campus of one of the biggest problems surrounding the Super Bowl.

Broken pipe in Sid Rich leaves campus disconnected

A pipe in Sid Richardson Hall burst Thursday morning, taking out power to the TCU servers.

University e-mail, phone and most Internet was taken offline, according to a TCU alert sent Thursday afternoon.

University officials said basic services like Internet, e-mail and university phones should be back up within about a day. However more complicated services, like servers, could be offline into next week.
