MLK Day of Service doubles participation

MLK Day of Service doubles participation

About 170 students followed the slogan of this year's Martin Luther King Jr. Day and decided to "Make it a day on, not a day off."

Melissa Gruver, community engagement coordinator, said that compared to its first year, the amount of service sites and students willing to serve doubled.

Almost 200 students volunteered at 10 different service sites in Tarrant County, Gruver said.

Two weeks after the Horned Frogs defeated Wisconsin in the Rose Bowl, the excitement had not slowed down as around 6,000 TCU fans continued celebrating at the Rose Bowl Celebration at Daniel-Meyer Coliseum on Monday.

In addition to the fans and football team, Chancellor Victor Boschini, Fort Worth Mayor Mike Moncrief and members of the Rose Bowl management committee attended the celebration to honor the undefeated Horned Frogs.

Senior broadcast journalism major Ashley Melnick was one of eight contestants chosen by the judges to remain in the top 12 ofSaturday's Miss America Pageant.

Melnick,who representedTexas, along with Miss Oklahoma Emoly West; Miss Rhode Island Deborah Saint-Vil; Miss Utah Christina Lowe; Miss Washington Jacquie Brown; Miss Arizona Kathryn Bulkley; Miss Virginia Caitlin Uze, and Miss California Arianna Afsar; Miss Arkansas Alyse Eady; Miss Hawaii Jalee Fuselier and Miss Nebraska Teresa Scanlan were the judges eight selections for the final 12.

Last week, the TCU men's swimming and diving team lost their first Mountain West conference meet in nearly two years at UNLV.

But Saturday, the team got back to their winning ways beating Utah and leading the entire match en route to a 171-123 victory at the University Recreation Center Natatorium. With the win the Frogs improved their record to 3-1 overall and 3-1 in conference play.

The women's teamalso won, 166-131. They too were coming off a loss to UNLV but had little trouble with the Utes, trailing only after the first race.

Despite committing a season-high 24 turnovers, the TCU Lady Frogs forced 31 Colorado State turnovers and sprinted past the Rams Saturday afternoon, 66-40. The win marked the Lady Frogs' sixth straight and gave TCU its best start in conference play since 2005.

TCU (12-6, 4-0 MWC) was led by senior forward Emily Carter with 20 points, including six three-pointers. Carter, who was 0 for 7 from three-point range on Jan. 12 against Wyoming, said she had to adjust her shot.

‘Apprentice’ contestant welcomed home

The cafeteria of Castleberry High School was filled with people of all ages to welcome home alumnus Clint RobertsonThursday.

A live band played while the 1988 graduate talked to his former classmates from Castleberry High and TCU as well as his family and the public.

When the chatter stopped, the welcome home reception began. The Castleberry band and cheerleaders performed their fight song and alma mater.

After the band and cheerleaders marched out of the area, Leigh Melton, president of Castleberry High School Exes Association, spoke.

Teachers, students visit campus for ‘Poly Universe’ workshop

Local teachers will join a group of 10-year-olds to learn from Hungarian artist János Saxon for an on-campus arts and mathematics workshop.

The "Poly Universe" workshop, invented by Saxon, would demonstrate the relationship between art and math using Saxons' patent "Toy Family."

Amanda Allison, an assistant professor and art education coordinator in the School of Art, said the "Toy Family" was a collection of plastic geometric shapes that children could use to learn about math while playing.

Three TCU School of Music faculty members attracted international interest in both music and the university following a special holiday performance in China.

Professors John Owings (piano), Misha Galaganov (viola) and Yuan Xiong Lu (double bass) led the annual New Year's Celebration Concert at the Shanghai Concert Hall on Dec. 26th.

More than 60 million listeners and viewers tuned into the concert, which was broadcast live to China and the United States through a live Internet stream, Owings said. Tickets to the performance sold out weeks in advance.
