Power outages leave students in the dark

Published Nov 5, 2010

Students across campus were left in the dark early Thursday morning after a widespread power outage.

The outage occurred around 1:30 a.m. and power remained off until mid-morning for most locations.

Associate Director of Residence Life Dave Cooper said, according to information he had, it was believed that the power outage was potentially due to a failed electrical feed from Encore Energy Partners LP, the university's energy supplier. He said he was unsure why the electricity connection failed to feed into campus.

In a match-up attended by ESPN College GameDay, No. 3 TCU travels to Salt Lake City to take on the No. 5 Utah Utes. The meeting will be the first time in the Mountain West Conference's 11-year history where two top-five teams face off in conference play.

Both teams are ranked in the top five in the BCS standings. One team will continue its path toward a shot at a BCS berth and perhaps the national championship. The other will be out of the lead for even a MWC Championship.

The goverment should not build sports stadiums

Published Nov 5, 2010

One thing I hate about studying economics is that it makes it so easy for you to become a killjoy. While I do enjoy taking down a protectionist or arguing with someone about why minimum wage laws hurt the poor, there are some things even I wish weren't true.

Take sports stadiums, for example. I love sports and am a big fan of my hometown teams, but I can't help but think that building a big stadium is a bad idea for economic progress.

Basketball team boosted by transfers

Published Nov 4, 2010

After finishing the 2009-2010 season with a 95-85 loss to BYU in the quarterfinals of the Mountain West Conference Championships, the TCU men's basketball team will have a new look entering its regular season opener.

The most notable roster difference is the number of transfers acquired during the offseason who are now part of the Horned Frogs squad.

Guards J.R. Cadot and Sammy Yeager and forward Andre Clark, all juniors, signed National Letters of Intent in April after finding success during their junior college years at their previous schools.

The Horned Frogs have talent, potential for a great season

Published Nov 4, 2010

When the TCU men's basketball team takes the court on Nov. 12 against Jackson State University in the first official game of the 2010-2011 season, most TCU students will probably be more focused on the Nov. 13 football game against San Diego State University.

However TCU students should be prepared for a more successful basketball season than in years past. From a talent and athleticism perspective, this looks to be the best team in the last few years, and certainly the best of the Jim Christian era.

Holding the No. 23 ranking in the Associated Press preseason poll, the Horned Frogs women's basketball team has never been ranked higher before the season started.

With three players who averaged 20 minutes or more returning, head coach Jeff Mittie said playing experience would be important.

"You can have seniors that maybe haven't been on the floor but ours have and they've all started in their career," the twelfth-year head coach said. "I think their experience of having been there and been through the process, hopefully helping some of these younger players."

People should find time to check weather alerts

Published Nov 3, 2010

During a thunderstorm, I pay close attention to any weather updates that appear on my browser or my phone. Even knowing that there could potentially be a tornado within a 50-mile radius freaks me out. I am quite fearful of wind-powered death machines traveling at 50 mph 8212; because that's what I see when I think of tornadoes. But rationally speaking, other people are normal and don't overreact as much as I do.
