Letter to the Editor: Campus community needs to be accepting of all members

Published Apr 15, 2009

I am personally amazed at all of the bad publicity one little article in the paper can cause. I just found out today that the university is on the news in Great Britain because of our "segregated" housing...

Openness should remain priority on campus

Published Apr 15, 2009

In the midst of the confusion surrounding Living Learning Communities and the university's decision not to implement new LLCs next year, there was silence in a corner of the campus.

Monday night, Rachel Siron, hall director of Carter and Samuelson halls, sent an e-mail to LLC members asking them to refer questions to the chancellor's office. One sentence read, "If you receive calls from the media, including the Skiff, please refer them to Tracy Syler-Jones," the associate vice chancellor and executive director of marketing and communication.

LLCs not conducive to campus unity

Published Apr 15, 2009

Please, will someone tell me again how the Living Learning Communities act to diversify and be inclusive at the same time?

Chancellor Victor Boschini's recent decision to reject the new LLCs will undoubtedly heighten the controversy that has gone nationwide in recent weeks. Discussions will inevitably revolve around how "Christian" Texas Christian University is and whether or not these communities will limit separation on campus or intensify it.

Staff demand for conflict resolution services jumps 25 percent

The number of formal complaints filed by faculty and staff to the conflict resolution section of Human Resources has increased by 25 percent this year, a university official said.

Shari Barnes, conflict resolution facilitator, said the number of complaints received rises every year but this year's 25 percent jump is the largest increase ever. It has been available to university staff members since October 2000 and to faculty members since May 2005, she said.

Barnes said she was initially surprised by the rise in complaints.

Neeley admissions system helpful to students

Published Apr 15, 2009

As a second semester sophomore, I was just accepted into the Neeley School of Business. I was ecstatic to receive my admissions e-mail over Spring Break. However, I found myself wondering about those who were given notice that their application had been denied.

As a freshman, I had the fortune to already know what I wanted to do and that Neeley was the school that could get me there, and so I applied and was accepted to TCU as a pre-business major.

Student proposal would return alcohol to tailgate

Published Apr 14, 2009

Students are working on proposing a modified format of the student tailgate that will effectively disperse cliques during the event and allow those of age to drink alcohol, an Interfraternity Council representative said.

Evan Berlin, Interfraternity Council president, said he and Student Body President Kelsie Johnson have worked with Panhellenic Council Representative Lindsay Ray to tout the Strategic Action Plan for Tailgating.

The proposal would place the tailgate near the Milton Daniel and Moncrief halls and the Brown-Lupton University Union, Johnson said.

In an unfortunate turn of events, Madonna was denied her bid to adopt a Malawian girl, Mercy James, in a decision that she is appealing to the Malawi Supreme Court.

According to a Monday article from The Associated Press, the country's High Court ruled on April 3 that the 50-year-old singer had not met the requirement that prospective adoptive parents must complete before adopting. In the article, judge Esme Chombo cited a law that prospective adoptive parents must live in Malawi for 18 to 24 months so officials can determine their suitability.

Offense powers baseball team to fourth straight win

When baseball season began, the Horned Frogs and Texas Tech weren't scheduled to play each other. By the conclusion of Monday's game between the two teams, the Red Raiders were probably wishing it had stayed that way.

Fresh off a four-game road swing, the No. 16 Horned Frog baseball team toppled the Red Raiders 12-5 at Lupton Stadium on Monday before a crowd of 2,052.

The team improved its overall record to 23-10 with the win and remains in third place in the Mountain West Conference.

The three-match road trip began Thursday when the Horned Frogs handed No. 41 New Mexico its first conference loss of the season with a 5-2 victory. The Lobos can still claim a share of the regular-season championship if they defeat San Diego State University at home April 21.

Chancellor: Criticism against LLCs not targeted at LGBTQ housing community

Published Apr 14, 2009

Chancellor Victor Boschini said Monday that the negative public reaction that prompted the decision to close the new Living Learning Communities was not targeted at approved housing for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgendered and questioning students and their supporters.

Boschini said he received many reactions regarding the announcement of the new LLCs, most of which were centered on concerns that the communities foster separatism.
