Love doctor: Make the first move

Published Feb 10, 2009

It takes a fat penguin to break the ice.

That's the first step to finding love, said David Coleman, the "Dating Doctor" and inspiration for the movie "Hitch." And for some of the nearly 1,000 students who came to hear him speak Monday night at the Brown-Lupton University Union ballroom, that was appropriate advice only five days before Valentine's Day.

"He said to just be open and up front," said Samantha Meade, a sophomore early childhood education major. "You can break the ice so you don't have to wait for the guy to make all the moves."

As a lifelong sports fanatic, I wouldn't be surprised if I knew the entire Dallas Cowboys roster at any given time.

As a kid, I thought Deion Sanders was the epitome of style and charisma, while Troy Aikman was the definition of a great man.

I looked up to these men with stars in my eyes and, in light of all the fumbles of recent athletes, I have begun to explore the question: Are celebrity athletes role models?

NBA star Charles Barkley has said in the past that he is not a role model.

Robert Carr Chapel wedding worth wait

Published Feb 10, 2009

Unofficial rule No. 76 for freshman girls at TCU: Book the Robert Carr Chapel now, even if you are not engaged. Finding the groom is the easy part.

The ongoing joke at freshman orientation depicts the mother of a TCU student booking the chapel even before her daughter is engaged. Some truth lies in this joke.

The booking office at the chapel fields 20 calls per day on average regarding booking for upcoming weddings, said Kristi Ingram, booking agent and wedding coordinator for the chapel.

"No, I think it's more efficient. It allows people to work more to gain experience, and I think hour-and-a-half classes are more efficient than half-hour classes."

Hana Litterer, senior finance and accounting major from Austin.

"No, because I've already had a 4-day week. If you can fit the same amount of hours in a 4-day week, you're not compromising anything."

Published Feb 6, 2009

The track and field team has high expectations this year, the team's head coach said.

But right now, the team is just trying to get everyone healthy and back into the swing of things, he said.

"So far it's kind of been a work in progress; it always is this time of year," head coach Darryl Anderson said. "We train up until Dec. 1, and then they're off for five weeks. We come back and we're scampering to find a groove and a rhythm."

Hutchison compelling rival for Perry in race for governor seat

With the recent election of President Barack Obama, it is evident that America is ready for a change. Next year's Texas gubernatorial election should prove to be no exception to the political revolution.

Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison, R-Texas, recently launched an exploratory committee to examine the possibility of her running for the state's highest office.

An article in Texas Monthly pointed out "Republicans who want change aren't going to look for it from a governor who will have been in office for more than nine years on primary day."

"We set really high goals," Ravaioli-Larkin said. "We go in every tournament with the goal of winning. We really have the depth this year and the talent to really take it deep."

After a three-month break, the golf team gets rolling again with a tournament in Puerto Rico starting Sunday.

Based loosely on a premise by "The Great Gatsby" novelist F. Scott Fitzgerald, "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button" is faced with the unique task of making an audience believe that a man can age backward.

For a film with a potentially preposterous concept such as this, not once did I question the authenticity of the film. This feat is achieved not only through some amazing special effects and a solid script, but also thanks to the performances of leads Brad Pitt and Cate Blanchett and a diverse supporting cast that includes Jason Flemyng and Taraji P. Henson.
