New equipment will allow faster DNA research

With new equipment allowing improved DNA sequencing research on the TCU campus, students in the College of Science and Engineering will have increased opportunity in the job market upon graduation, said Phil Hartman, professor of biology.The DNA research that used to take weeks, will now take days with the 4300 DNA Analyzer, Hartman said.

"DNA sequencing is an important technique because it was only talked about theoretically," Hartman said. "Now graduate students will have hands-on experience. This makes our graduates more marketable."

Kasey Davis' favorite football teams were Oklahoma University, TCU and the Conroe High School Tigers."He loved football ever since he grew up in Oklahoma," said Davis' mother, Jenny Cantrell.

Davis, a redshirt freshman kicker for the TCU football team, was shot in the chest early in the morning Jan. 3 in an apartment complex parking lot in Conroe. Police found his body in the Chevy Tahoe he borrowed from his mother. He was 20.

'Twas 19 days before Christmas, and the Lady Frogs were a mess.Fresh off a 40-point loss to No. 2 Duke on Dec. 6, the TCU womens' basketball team was a disappointing 2-5 and had lost to three top 15 teams by a combined score of 249-157. After just seven games, the season was already slipping away.

Sophomore guard Adrianne Ross said that while things looked bleak early, the players forced themselves to keep a positive outlook.

"We looked at ours as one of the tougher nonconference schedules," Ross said. "We were mentally tough."

A new position and new responsibilities await the recently named assistant vice chancellor for marketing and communications as the spring semester begins.Tracy Syler-Jones, formerly the director of communications, will assist in the development of new media initiatives, refining school and college marketing and communication plans, and overseeing planning and implementation of institutional advertising. These duties are in addition to those of her former position as head of the Office of Communications.

Survey: Grade expectations high

Getting above-average grades with relatively few hours of work is an ideal situation for a college student.According to the 2005 National Survey of Student Engagement, students coming to college are expecting just that.

More than 90 percent of students entering college expect to receive grades of B or better, but less than 20 percent expect to spend more than 25 hours a week studying, the amount of time which most faculty say is needed, according to the survey.

The TCU baseball team players, while pleased with the respect granted to them by their No. 19 national preseason ranking, said they refuses to allow early recognition to dull their intensity."You want to be in the top 25 and be considered an elite program," junior outfielder Austin Adams said. "But to tell the truth, preseason rankings just means what you did last year."

Though every team aims to be perceived as top-level, sophomore pitcher Sam Demel said programs on the rise - such as TCU - are easily singled out by opponents.

Between the hot shooting of junior forward Ashley Davis at one end and a stalwart team defensive effort at the other, the TCU Lady Horned Frogs coasted to a 71 - 57 victory over Air Force Saturday.The Frogs, who led by as many as 24 late in the second half, continually frustrated the Falcons on both sides of the ball. TCU's aggressive full-court press forced 18 turnovers and led to 27 points, while Davis strung together a second consecutive strong performance with 20 points on 6-of-9 shooting.

So, it's the time of year where I am supposed to say my goodbye. I've been putting this off for almost two weeks now. It's not that I am not excited to leave, because anyone who knows me realizes I've had a countdown going since the first day of school ... three months, 24 days; two months, 18 days; one month, 10 days; and now, finally, only 15 more days until I graduate. But there is a part of me that is sad to be leaving.It's amazing what I've learned since I've been here. Most has taken place outside of the classroom.

As utility prices continue a steady upward climb, local universities, including TCU, are coping with price increases by raising tuition, budgeting more for utility costs and renovating buildings to make them more energy-friendly.TCU is proposing to increase its $8 million utility budget by $1.5 million in the next fiscal year to accommodate the rising costs, said Brian Gutierrez, vice chancellor for finance and administration.

Texas Secretary of State and TCU alumnus Roger Williams spoke to students Tuesday about the realities of the business world.Williams, who is the chairman of the board of Roger Williams AutoMall, gave advice on how to get jobs and keep them. He said it is the responsibility of an individual to convince an employer to hire them.

"Life is retail," Williams said. "No one will sell yourself like you will."

Williams gave students tips on interviewing and respecting their elders in the workplace. He said it is important to be nice to everyone and network.

She is nervous, but excited; scared, but thrilled; anxious, but ready.She is 1,200 miles from home, away from her familiar Minnesota territory - the one she grew up in. And the only person she knows is her roommate.

That young woman was me three and a half years ago. Now my college career is about to end, and I feel like I've matured quite a bit since freshman year.
