Student-run campus ministry gaining rapid popularity

A recently established student-run campus ministry has caught fire with university students in the past several weeks.

More than 500 students attended Monday night's Ignite college worship. Students from University of North Texas and Texas A&M University joined Horned Frogs at the third Ignite meeting.



Paige Nettles, a senior fashion merchandising major, pioneered Ignite last semester. Nettles said the goal of the nondenominational ministry is to bring college students together to worship and hear the gospel in a comfortable setting.

Official: Internship legality not an issue

Despite increased media attention about the legality of unpaid internships in recent weeks, the university did not have a problem with students reporting doing unrelated work in their career field at an unpaid internship, a Career Services official said.

According to an April 2 article in The New York Times, federal and state officials had concerns that employers used unpaid internships for free labor by having students do work that was mostly noneducational, such as making coffee and sweeping bathrooms.

Sodexo protest does not affect university

While labor disputes between Sodexo and some of its employees have not surfaced on campus like they have in other states, Sodexo employees at the university may have nowhere to turn should trouble hit home.

In recent weeks, employees of Sodexo, the French-based multinational food service company contracted by the university, have incorporated strikes and civil disobedience as a part of the Service Employees International Union's protest efforts across 10 U.S. states against the company's alleged intimidation of employees seeking to unionize.

Memories center on other Frogs

As I sit on the steps of Scharbauer Hall, watching the sun's golden rays dance on Frog Fountain, I can't help but feel a lump rising in my throat. The sun falls behind the Brown-Lupton University Union, and I suddenly realize my time at TCU is also drawing to a close. I've learned so much since I first began the daunting journey called college four years ago.

It all began with Frog Camp. I never knew three days could have such an impact on my life.

After completing the 26-mile Cowtown Marathon on Feb. 27, Brett Major said he could barely feel his legs.

"It's such a mental struggle to finish a marathon," said Major, a senior psychology major.



Major had a big crowd of supporters on the day of the marathon. Christin Lynch, a senior nursing major, said she ran alongside Major for a little bit and cheered him on.



"I don't know how he did it," Lynch said. "I feel so inspired. I have never had the desire to run this far, but watching him I feel like I could do it."

Four students chosen to represent Honors College

Four students will represent the John V. Roach Honors College in the House of Student Representatives for the first time this fall, following the House election this past week.

Seven students applied for the four recently allocated seats in the House, the results of which were released Wednesday.



Ron Pitcock, J. Vaughn & Evelyne H. Wilson Honors Fellow, said the diverse interests of honors students will be an asset to the House's representation.

Students get TV experience

University students are now getting a chance to announce games for the nationally-ranked Horned Frog baseball team not only on the radio, but on television as well.

Chuck LaMendola, play-by-play announcer for the baseball team, said that because of the deal struck with The Mountain West Sports Network last fall to air student-produced sporting events, students are now getting television announcing experience for the first time. Students were able to call games on the radio in the past, he said.

Officials hire firm to study streetcar project

City of Fort Worth officials moved closer to finalizing a modern streetcar system with a unanimous vote to hire engineering and consulting firm HDR Inc. to begin developing phases one and two of a three-part plan, a city official said.

David Gaspers, a senior planner in the city's planning and development department, said the company will begin planning a recommended alignment route and developing a business plan for the streetcar system as early as next week.

Senior concert to debut Q&A session

The senior class of the School for Classical and Contemporary Dance will showcase its artistry to the public this week by featuring a new question and answer portion with the choreographers, a senior choreographer said.

Natalie Henry, a senior modern dance major, said that for the first time, all choreographers of the night will be available to answer questions from the audience about their pieces following the concert. She said the students and professors added this component as a way for choreographers to talk about their work.

Student organization to honor retired professor

The university's chapter of the Public Relations Student Society of America is in the process of re-naming the campus organization to honor a retired professor for the notable work she did both locally and nationally for public relations education, a PRSSA representative said.

Amiso George, the PRSSA head faculty adviser, said Doug Newsom deserves to be a part of the student organization's title. Newsom taught at the university and was also actively involved with the Public Relations Society of America.

Jewish studies gets new director

Brite Divinity School officials found a new director of the Jewish Studies Program last week.

Nancy Ramsay, Brite Divinity School dean, said Ariel Feldman, a current Newton Post-Doctoral Fellow at the University of Manchester in England, accepted the position early last week and would join the staff as the Rosalyn and Manny Rosenthal Assistant Professor of Jewish Studies and director of the Jewish Studies Program in fall 2011. Both posts are currently vacant.
