Approvals delay sports broadcasting major until fall 2010

Students looking to major in sports broadcasting will have the opportunity fall 2010, a university official said.

David Whillock, dean of the College of Communication, said college officials plan to offer the major by next year. Whillock said the major was set to be offered this year, but difficulties with being approved by all the appropriate committees delayed it.



"(Members of the department) were under the assumption that it had gone through all the committees," Whillock said. "It had not completed the undergraduate committee."

Mills: Swine flu numbers withheld at request of county

The university is not releasing the number of students affected by the H1N1 virus, commonly known as swine flu, at the request of Tarrant County Public Health, a university official said.

Don Mills, vice chancellor of student affairs, said that because the university is not testing everybody for H1N1, it would be misleading to release numbers.



"To say we have X number of cases is a guess, and it's not really helpful," Mills said.

University climbs college ranking system

The 2010 list of America's Best Colleges published by U.S. News & World Report may give readers a quick fix list of the top colleges in the nation, but a flawed ranking system means that the best schools are not always at the top of the list, the university's dean of admissions said.

TCU climbed the list three places from its rank of 113 last year to 110 on the recently released list of America's Best Colleges. According to the U.S. News & World Report Web site, peer assessment or reputation accounts for 25 percent of the score used to determine rank.

The soccer team secured another win under its belt after defeating the University of Texas at San Antonio 1-0 in the Friday night game.

At about seven minutes and 20 seconds into the game, midfielder Kaylie Garcia who wore the number two jersey was assisted by a throw in from the right side of the field just before she shot the ball into the lower left corner of UTSA's goal from the middle of the box.



In the first half of the game the Lady Frogs poured pressure onto the Roadrunners' defense and took 19 shots versus the UTSA's two by halftime.

Volleyball team opens season with NCAA tournament in mind

The women's volleyball team will open their season with four home games in 2009.

The Horned Frogs will play against the University of Arkansas on Friday, and against both Grambling State and Loyola Marymount on Saturday.



Junior outside hitter Irene Hester said that she is excited about the upcoming games, which will help the four incoming freshmen gain experience. The games will also help the team in reaching its goal of making it to the NCAA tournament. She said that the team has more heart this season and will strive every moment to accomplish its goal.

College of Education receives honor for childhood education

The College of Education became one of only six institutions ever to receive the Certificate of Distinction in May, the highest honor granted by the International Reading Association, a professor in the college said.



Cathy Block, an education professor, said the university was recognized as having an outstanding reading preparation program that helps its students excel above others in teaching early childhood through grade six education majors how to be more effective reading teachers.

Former nursing student helps conduct study on Hispanic organ donation

In May, former nursing student Jennifer Zemplinski compiled a literature review about the study she helped conduct concerning the Hispanic community and the subject of organ donation, specifically, the lack of organ donation within the community.

Associate professor and Harris College Doctor of Nursing Practice Program director Dr. Kathy Baker compiled the study, "Hispanic Perspectives Regarding Organ Donation," to understand the Hispanic community's feelings and knowledge of organ donation in order to ultimately increase Hispanic American donor rates.
