Published Feb 6, 2009

Angie Ravaioli-Larkin is in her 15th season as head coach of the women's golf team. Success has come frequently for teams under her guidance, and she said she hopes that trend will continue as the team moves forward this spring.

"We set really high goals," Ravaioli-Larkin said. "We go in every tournament with the goal of winning. We really have the depth this year and the talent to really take it deep."

After a three-month break, the golf team gets rolling again with a tournament in Puerto Rico starting Sunday.

Review: ‘Benjamin Button’ dazzles with acting, effects

Based loosely on a premise by "The Great Gatsby" novelist F. Scott Fitzgerald, "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button" is faced with the unique task of making an audience believe that a man can age backward.

For a film with a potentially preposterous concept such as this, not once did I question the authenticity of the film. This feat is achieved not only through some amazing special effects and a solid script, but also thanks to the performances of leads Brad Pitt and Cate Blanchett and a diverse supporting cast that includes Jason Flemyng and Taraji P. Henson.

Paying for college teaches students skills and values

A recent study by UCLA's Higher Education Research Institute has shown that almost 50 percent of freshmen planned to work their way through college to pay for expenses.

Working undoubtedly adds more commitments to a schedule already filled with classes and exams, but it's a sign of maturity.

Handling finances and taking responsibility is a rite of passage that prepares students for the world awaiting them after graduation.

Tax cuts for rich and poor needed to propel economy

Published Feb 6, 2009

With the House of Representatives recently passing the $819 billion stimulus package, people believe that this piece of legislation somehow will lift the United States out of a recession.

The main purpose of the bill is to increase spending on infrastructure. The term "infrastructure" is used vaguely though. For instance, the bill would spend $355 million to fund programs for the education and prevention of sexually transmitted diseases. Projects such as this and numerous others in the stimulus bill are not only irresponsible but can harm the economy.

Pitching positions still up for grabs

Carrying 13 pitchers, the baseball team has many choices for the mound, but no definite decisions have been made, head coach Jim Schlossnagle said.

While those decisions will be based on performance in practice over the next two weeks, Schlossnagle said he expects four freshmen - Kyle Winkler, Kaleb Merck, Erik Miller and Walker Kelly to contribute significantly.

Freshman pitchers will contribute a great deal of playing time, Schlossnagle said.

Students juggle school and work to pay bills

Nicholas Jackson, a sophomore English major, said he maintains a part-time job to pay for his phone bill, car insurance and to get a little spending money, but often feels overwhelmed by the joint responsibility.

"I find it harder to find energy to commit to hours of studying," Jackson said. "Work forces you to micromanage all of your time and if you have a strong work ethic, it's hard to choose between putting more effort into your work or school."

For a program that at once went 41 seasons without a bowl win, TCU has rebounded nicely to become one of the elite teams in the country.

Once forced to stock a team full of players that the University of Texas, Texas A&M University and Texas Tech University didn't want, the football program has become more than just an afterthought in the world of Texas recruiting.

On Wednesday, 20 players signed National Letters of Intent to play here, including a handful of four-star recruits.
