Students and public fill art museum for Lone Star Film Society?s Oscar watch party

Published Mar 2, 2011

The bright lights came on Sunday night as film fans came out in full force for The Lone Star Film Society's third annual Oscar Watch Party.

Decked out in red carpet attire, from look-a-like brand name designer suits to Oscar worthy dresses, film fans gathered at The Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth in what Alec Jhangiani, art director for the LSFS, said he expected to be the most largely populated event in one night for the LSFS.

"Last year we had about 600 and this year I wouldn't be surprised if we had almost a thousand people the way it's increased," Jhangiani said.

Frogs’ 2011 season is just how ‘baseball go’

Published Mar 2, 2011

Blame No. 8 TCU's three-game losing streak on a College World Series hangover; blame the 2.67 runs per game in those three losses to the newly instituted bats for college baseball 8212; the ones with less ping and more plop 8212; or simply discount the losses as Texas Rangers manager Ron Washington might: "That's the way baseball go."

CWS hangover? The Frogs sit at 4-4 and have averaged four runs per game thus far and less than three runs per game during their current losing streak. Through eight games in 2010, the Frogs sat pretty at 7-1, averaging 9.5 runs per game.

Campus job fair takes practice to conquer

Published Mar 2, 2011

With just two months remaining in the semester, many students started their job search at a career fair offered on campus.

Kara Lutley, a senior marketing and business information systems major, was one of the many hopeful students at the event.

"This is my fifth time coming to the career fair," Lutley said. "I've been coming every year since I was a second-semester sophomore looking for internships. Now I'm graduating in May...I thought I might as well come back and look for an actual job."

Texas Independence Day worthy of explanation

Published Mar 2, 2011

Wednesday marked the 175th anniversary of the signing of the Texas Declaration of Independence 8212; a date marked as Texas Independence Day.

There may be a stereotype or two about Texan pride. The "Don't Mess With Texas" state-sponsored commercials do no favors.

TCU students who attended elementary school in the Lone Star State may remember not only reciting the United States Pledge of Allegiance, but also reciting the Texas Pledge of Allegiance as well as singing the Texas state song, "Texas, Our Texas":

In their last outing, the Lady Frogs defeated University of New Mexico 84-71.

Guard/forward Sverrisdottir led all scorers with 24 points on 6-of-11 shooting. She nailed all eight of free throws and had eight assists.

Frogs drop third straight after 4-3 loss to Dallas Baptist

The definition of insanity, said TCU head coach Jim Schlossnagle, is continuing to do things over and over and thinking something is going to change.

No. 8 TCU couldn't overcome four errors in a 4-3 loss to Dallas Baptist Tuesday night as the Frogs surrendered a lead in the ninth inning for the third straight game.

Even though junior shortstop Taylor Featherston knocked in two RBIs and hit his first home run of the season, 3,877 fans at Lupton Stadium witnessed the first three game losing streak for the baseball program since March 2008.

Combine should give Cowboys good look at potential recruits

Published Mar 1, 2011

As the NFL combine wrapped up yesterday, the Dallas Cowboys should have a significantly better outlook on the upcoming draft. More importantly, one TCU player would make a great fit in the Dallas clubhouse.

The Cowboys have the No. 9 pick in the draft and should theoretically pick one of the top 10 players available. Granted, no TCU players will make a top 10 draft pick, but there are a number of needs that Dallas has that can be solved with a wisely selected top 10 pick.

A very likely pick of the Cowboys will be Nebraska cornerback Prince Amukamara.

Frogs finish ninth overall, Roudebush ties for 11th in John Hayt Collegiate Invitational

Published Mar 1, 2011

TCU finished ninth overall and Frogs' senior Scott Roudebush finished tied for 11th place as the TCU men's golf team completed competition Tuesday at the John Hayt Collegiate Invitational played at Sawgrass Country Club.

The Frogs saw the squad combine for an 18-over-par 306 after junior Johan de Beer, who shot a team-best round of 73 during the day, was disqualified. The squad was tied for the lead following day one action with Auburn at -6. Arkansas ended the week on top of the pack at +3, as all but two teams (Arkansas, -5; LSU, -1) shot over par during the final round.

Electronic grading services make education a formula

Published Mar 1, 2011

The Educational Testing Service presented evidence on Feb. 19 that found electronic grading services for college placement exams to be just as reliable as human graders, and the reverberations sparked debate in the education world.

Controversy flared between the technological-progressive side of academics and the more classically-oriented camp, according to a Feb. 21 article from Inside Higher Ed. Should computers be responsible for grading students if the reliability is the same and resources saved?

Greeks face tougher bus loading regulations

Published Mar 1, 2011

Sigma Alpha Epsilon is one of the fraternities that is instituting changes to its bus loading policies to stem the numbers of uninvited guests and the amount of disorderly conduct for students going to off-campus parties and events, SAE President Scott Miller said.

The changes are being enacted after an e-mail was sent to TCU fraternities Feb. 14 from Interfraternity Council adviser Keith Becklin. Complaints included public urination, disorderly conduct, public intoxication and open containers of alcohol, according to Becklin's e-mail.
