Flu cases on the rise

The number of flu cases on campus has risen since before the break, but an official at the Brown-Lupton Health Center said students should not be overly alarmed.

"It is just the winter. People come back from Christmas break with the germs, and it spreads," Health Services Administrator Stacey Simpson said.

The Health Center will offer free flu vaccinations to all students until March, she said.

"Right now is when the flu peaks, and then it dies down around March when spring comes," Simpson said.

PROVO, Utah8212;Junior guard Ronnie Moss scored a game-high 27 points, but as TCU fell to No. 9 BYU on Saturday, 83-67, at the Cougars' Marriott Center.

The Frogs dropped to 10-10 overall and 1-4 in Mountain West Conference play. BYU improved to 18-1 overall and 4-0 in the MWC.

Moss matched a season high in points on 10-of-17 shooting, including 3-of-5 from 3-point range, while adding six rebounds.

BYU guard Jimmer Fredette, the nation's scoring leader, scored 21 points, on 6-of-16 shooting. Seven of his points came at the free-throw line.

Lady Frogs take on BYU Wednesday

The Lady Frogs hope to extend their six-game winning streak against Brigham Young University on Wednesday night. Tip-off is set for 8 p.m. at the Daniel-Meyer Coliseum.

In their last outing, the Lady Frogs (12-6, 4-0 MWC) defeated Colorado State University (8-8, 1-2 MWC) 66-40 to extend their winning streak to six games. The Lady Frogs shot nearly 45 percent from the field and out-rebounded the Lady Rams 39-26.

Career services becomes

New specialized career advisors will begin working with students on a more personal level within Career Services, rather than providing only general assistance to students.

Assistant director Terrence Hood said Career Services will be assigning a career adviser to each college and will ultimately establish more specified services for all majors. The initiative has been building up momentum since its beginning in November through efforts to gain the support of the deans of the colleges, he said.

Day of service embodies King’s vision

On the 25th anniversary of Martin Luther King Jr. Day and days after what would have been Dr. King's 82nd birthday, students who chose to serve their community on a federal holiday instead of sleeping in are the ones who understood King's message best.

"Make it a day on, not a day off" was this year's MLK Day slogan, and the message fits this campus.

King envisioned an America where our generation judged one another by content of character, not color.

SGA bill to change student constitution fails

After heated debate in the House of Student Representatives meeting, a bill that would have approved a revision of the Constitution of the Student Body did not pass Tuesday night.

The House's ad hoc committee proposed a change to the constitution that would have removed Programming Council as the body responsible for student programming. It would have replaced it with the new programming organization called theCrew, which formed in August.

TheCrew replaced Programming Council this fall as the primary event-planning group in on-campus events.

Gibbs reaches out to college students for support of health care bill

In an effort to gain support for the health care legislation passed last year, White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs hosted a college student conference call to discuss the importance of the Affordable Care Act for young Americans.

The Affordable Care Act, commonly known as Obamacare, will be up for repeal in a House vote Wednesday, he said.

Under the current act, young Americans have been allowed to stay on their parents' insurance until age 26. If the act is repealed, though, this new measure would go away, Gibbs said.

The Neeley Entrepreneurship Program was named the 2011 National Model Undergraduate Entrepreneurship Program at the United States Association for Small Business and Entrepreneurship annual conference.

Out of the 47 schools that entered, the Neeley Entrepreneurship Program was one of three finalists that presented a formal presentation at USASBE's annual conference in South Carolina, according to a news release from the university.

Civil case against TCU begins Thursday morning

A hearing that will determine if a civil suit filed against the university will continue to trial is scheduled for 10:30 a.m. today.

The suit, originally filed in 2008, alleges that university officials attempted to cover up a 2006 sexual assault.

The plaintiff, identified only as K.S., and her lawyers claim in the lawsuit that the university "attempted to cover up the misconduct of the miscreant athletes by urging K.S. not to report the drugging and gang-rape."
