The new parking garage that will occupy much of what was formerly Lot 5 will remain empty until the first week of September, a TCU Police Department official said.

DeAnn Jones, the coordinator for transportation and parking services, said that the parking garage was scheduled to be completed by the first TCU football home game, but may open up earlier than expected.

“There haven’t been any delays,” Jones said. “It was always scheduled to open on the weekend of the first home game.”

“It may actually open on the first weekend in September,” she said.

The garage, officially known as the Frog Alley Parking Garage, will hold 992 parking spaces, an upgrade from the 611 spots contained in the old Lot 5. An additional 153 surface parking spaces will be available in what remains of the lot.

The Frog Alley Parking Garage is one of two garages being built on campus. The Worth Hills garage began construction after Brachman Hall was torn down at the end of the 2015 spring semester.

Chancellor Victor J. Boschini said at the start of construction, which began after the end of the TCU home football schedule in 2014, that the garage would displace students.

“This one’s gonna be hard; we’re just gonna start on it and hope to make it happen,” Boschini said.

One of the displaced students is first-year neuroscience major Collin Peterson, who parked his car in Lot 4, which is typically an overflow lot, used when the lots closer to campus dormitories are full. Since construction began on the Frog Alley garage, these overflow lots have become a temporary hub for students with first-year permits.

Peterson said that although the lot is a long walk from his room in Milton Daniel, he was pleased to find a parking spot in the first place.

“It’s kind of a far walk,” Peterson said. “I’m just glad there is parking. It’s better than some big public school, where there’s like no parking.”

“Still though, I’m excited for whenever the parking garage opens.”
