The Student Center Ballroom may never be the same after being crowded with pirates, old men and cocktail waitresses all making non-alcoholic beverages at Alpha Delta Pi’s fourth annual “Mocktails Blend-Off” Thursday night.
Liz Byrd, ADPi Vice President and event chairwoman, said the night was an overall success. The sorority reached their goal of $2,500 through entry fees, T-shirt sales and student voting to benefit the Ronald McDonald House charities, she said.
“One of the reasons we have this event is to raise awareness on campus about the dangers of drinking and driving, and to raise money for the Ronald McDonald charity,” Byrd said.
Representatives from 18 different fraternities, sororities and other student organizations competed by creating their own non-alcoholic drink. Each team of four was judged according to taste, presentation, creativity and spirit, said Byrd.
Phi Gamma Delta walked away the grand prize winner for their casino-like exhibit and mixed fruity drink, “Four Aces.” The team won a trip to Breckenridge, Colo., Byrd said.
Other winners were Delta Gamma for second place, Delta Tau Delta for third and Pi Kappa Phi for the spirit award, Byrd said.
The second place team took home a paid party at Billy Bob’s, the third place team won a dinner for the team and eight other members, and the spirit winner got a trophy, Byrd said.
Jennifer McCarthy, a junior English major and bartender for Kappa Kappa Gamma, said she participated in the event because it was a chance for different organizations to get together and have fun in a safe way.
Trooper Lonny Haschel from the Department of Public Safety spoke briefly on the dangers of drinking and driving.
“With Spring Break coming up, students need to remember to give up their keys if they’ve had even one drink,” Haschel said.
