TCU’s women’s volleyball team swept the Villanova Classic this weekend giving the Lady Frogs a perfect 9-0 record on the season. The team tied the record for the best start in school history set in 2008. This is the third tournament they have swept this year.
Senior Kristen Hester was named tournament MVP. Sarah Joeckel and Megan Munce, both juniors, also earned all-tournament honors. Hester was also named the Mountain West Player of the Week. She was an offensive juggernaut registering 43 kills on the weekend. Hester helped to seal the Frogs’ win with eight kills in the clinching set against Villanova.
The tournament began on Friday, Sept. 9 with the Frogs matched up against the Loyola (MD) Greyhounds. The match was a back and forth affair with the Frogs and Greyhounds trading sets. TCU won the 1st (25-12) and 3rd (25-9) sets. Loyola took the 2nd (30-28) and 4th (28-26) sets. TCU came out to dominate the 5th set 15-5. Sloane Sunstrum led the team with 22 kills.
On Saturday the Frogs opened up against Colgate. TCU won the first set 25-17. Colgate then battled back in the 2nd, snatching a narrow 27-29 win. Colgate stayed strong in the 3rd, but the Frogs held on for the 25-22 win. TCU continued in the 4th, winning 25-16. Hester led the team with 16 kills. Munce led the team with 46 assists.
The final game of the tournament matched TCU against the host, the Villanova Wildcats. The Frogs won the first and second sets 25-21 and 25-16 respectively. Villanova came back in the 3rd set 25-16. TCU clinched the tournament on the fourth set 25-21. The Frogs were led by Hester’s 16 kills and Munce’s 41 assists.
TCU returns to action tonight at the University Recreation Center against rival Baylor. Baylor is 8-2 on the year.
