The TCU women’s volleyball team started its last tournament before Big 12 Conference play with a sweep of North Carolina Central on Friday.

The Frogs (9-3, 0-0 Big 12) dominated NCCU 3-0 (25-9, 25-16, 25-21) on the first day of the Spartan Spiketacular at UNC Greensboro in Fleming Gymnasium.

From the first whistle, TCU controlled the match against the Eagles (0-14, 0-0 MEAC). Sophomore outside hitter Macy Capen helped the Frogs to a 4-1 start with a kill, and the team went on another run to reach a 15-4 lead. Senior middle blocker Yvonne Igodan contributed five kills in the 25-9 set win.

The Eagles fought hard in the second set and tied the score eight times. A kill from freshman middle blocker Natalie Gower excelled the Frogs forward from a 12-12 tie, and TCU went on a 13-4 run to end the set 25-16.

NCCU didn’t give up, though, as the team led a majority of the third set with a 14-10 lead. Junior right-side hitter Stephanie Holland and sophomore defensive specialist Sutton Sunstrum, who played outside hitter in the match, took over and recorded seven and five kills in the set, leading to the 3-0 sweep of NCCU.

Holland recorded a team-high of ten kills, while Igodan added eight. Gower tallied seven. Sophomore setter Alexia Heist chipped in 20 assists in the win, while freshman defensive specialist Jen Miller wore the libero jersey for the first time and finished with nine digs.

TCU will compete against George Mason at 10 a.m. and tournament-host UNC Greensboro at 6 p.m. on Saturday to finish out the last tournament before Big 12 Conference play.
