Men’s tennis beat Seminoles, fall to Gators at ITA National Kick-Off

Mens tennis beat Seminoles, fall to Gators at ITA National Kick-Off

The TCU men’s tennis team (1-1, 0-0 Big 12) clinched a 4-3 win against No. 35 Florida State (9-1, 0-0 ACC) but ultimately fell 4-2 to No. 14 University of Florida (3-0, 0-0 SEC) at the ITA National Kick-Off in Gainesville, Fla. over the weekend.

TCU, currently ranked No. 38 in the country, had a slow start against FSU Saturday afternoon, losing the doubles point after a 6-5 (5) tiebreaker.

In singles, the Frogs trailed the Noles 2-0. Juniors Arnau DachsNick Chappell and Facundo Lugones pulled off wins, but it was freshman Trey Daniel’s 5-6 (4-7), 6-4, 6-2 win against FSU’s Michael Rinaldi that clinched the Frogs’ victory.

On Sunday, Dachs and Daniel lost 6-2 to Florida’s Maxx Lipman and Gordon Watson at doubles. Chapell and junior Will Stein later fought for a 6-3 win.

The Frogs ultimately lost the doubles point when the Gators’ Spencer Newman and Diego Hidalgo beat Lugones and freshman Jhonathan Gonzalez 6-5 after winning a 7-3 tiebreaker.

Chappell and Lugones were the only players who brought wins to the team in singles. Florida’s Lipman clinched the team’s victory with a 6-5 (7-4), 6-2 win over the freshman Gonzalez.

Because of the loss, TCU will not move on to compete in the ITA National Indoor Team Championships. Next on the Frogs’ schedule is the USTA Dallas Challenger on Feb. 1-2.
