TCU Volleyball began the season on a high note in Fort Worth this weekend, sweeping all three opponents in the Crosstown Classic tournament.
The team began the tournament by defeating Abilene Christian University and Texas State University on Friday. The team followed Friday’s performance with another victory on Saturday, this time against University of Texas at El Paso.
The tournament, which took place at TCU’s campus recreation center, marked the beginning of a new era for TCU Volleyball, with Jill Kramer entering her first season as head coach.
It was also the first time since 2011 that the frogs opened the season with a 3-0 record.
“I thought it was a great start to the season,” Kramer said. “The team has put in a lot of preparation. They have committed to making a lot of changes and that was really evident in our play all weekend long.”
Kramer said that even though fatigue began to set in by Saturday’s match against UTEP, she was pleased with how the team managed to fight back.
“The best thing was to see our team step up in that situation (against UTEP), trust each other and make plays,” Kramer said. “As a coach, that is what you want to see.”
The weekend was highlighted by strong performances from senior Sutton Sunstrum, who recorded double-digit kills in the matches against UTEP and Texas State, and junior Jillian Bergeson, who recorded double-doubles in those same two matches.
Bergeson was awarded All-Tournament honors for the first time as a Horned Frog.
The team will take the court again when they travel to San Diego next weekend for the SDSU/USD Invitational. Their first match is set for Friday at 6:30 p.m. against Dartmouth College.
