“As a coastal city, Houston is no stranger to extreme weather. That being said, Hurricane Harvey has caused devastation to a level this city has never before seen and we are not thru it yet. In 2005, with Rita approaching, Houstonians were told to evacuate. We did. The storm barely affected Houston but people died in car accidents and from heat exhaustion waiting in extreme traffic to evacuate. It’s a delicate balance deciding when to call for evacuation. This time, we were told to stay put. Unfortunately, that wasn’t the right decision for many. City leaders will have to answer for that in the days to come. Right now, I have friends who have been ordered by bullhorn to evacuate and who can’t find a way out. We are praying for dry weather soon!”
