No. 13 TCU beach volleyball finished the Horned Frog Challenge Sunday by splitting a pair of matches against the Louisiana-Monroe Warhawks (ULM) and No. 11 Florida International Panthers (FIU), finishing the weekend with a 3-1 record.
The Horned Frogs won a 5-0 decision against ULM and suffered a 4-1 match loss against FIU. These matches came after the TCU defeated the Houston Baptist Huskies and Texas A&M-Kingsville Javelinas Saturday, the first day of the Horned Frog Challenge.
For the third season in a row, the Horned Frogs have started the year 3-1.
“Even though we lost, the girls competed,” head coach Hector Gutierrez said. “In the end, it’s the small details that make the difference. I am happy with the way we competed, and I think we got better as a team today.”
During the Horned Frog Challenge, the combos of Haven Hill/Cassie House, Jillian Bergeson/Jaelyn Greene and Avery Arellano/Jensyn Bledsoe finished 3-1. Meanwhile, the duo of Brooke Sassin and Jordan Westendorff were 2-1, while Hannah Rogers and Molly Scheel went 2-2 during the weekend.
Against FIU, the Horned Frogs dropped two three-set matches with House/Hill (17-21, 21-16, 18-16) and Bledsoe/Arellanno (21-18, 16-21, 15-11), while Greene/Bergeson (21-11, 20-22, 15-11) won a close battle in three. This led to the Frogs dropping their first match of the 2018 season.
After dropping the first set of the match against ULM 21-16, the combo of Claire Doyle and Westendorff won the next two sets (21-12, 15-8) over Holland Ponthieux and Taylor Meyer. The other four TCU teams were victorious in two sets. After dominating ULM, the Horned Frogs improved to 3-1.
The Horned Frogs are back in action Saturday and Sunday in the Fight in the Fort, where they play host to the No. 18 Tulane Green Wave at 11 a.m. and the No.14 Cal-Poly Mustangs at 3 p.m. Saturday. They will then play the Arizona State Sun Devils at 12 p.m. Sunday in the final home meet of the season.
