The Horned Frogs picked up their first two wins as members of the CCSA conference Friday, beating No. 17 Tulane, 4-1 and No. 16 Georgia State, 3-2.

Hailey Brockett and Avery Arellano led the way against Georgia State, wining their first match in straight sets, 21-17, 21-14. The team won another match, moving up 2-0 on the Panthers. However, Georgia State prevented the Horned Frogs from running away with the victory, as it won two matches to even the series at 2-2.

It came down to Molly Scheel and Taylor Bradley as they played against Georgia State pair Maddy Delmonte and Olivia Stasevich. Scheel and Bradley were able to power through and win the last two points of the match to earn TCU’s first ever conference game win. 

In its second match of the day, TCU was able to quickly pull ahead of Tulane.

The Frogs maintained a 4-0 lead over the Green Wave en route to their second victory of the day.

“The two wins against Georgia State and Tulane completed our main goal of winning at least two conference matches. We were very pleased to go 3-1 in our home opener,” head coach Hector Guiterrez said.

The team concluded the Horned Frogs Challenge and went 1-1 on the second day of the tournament by beating Missouri State and losing to No. 19 Grand Canyon.

Despite wins by Hill/Orellana and Scheel/Bradley, the team was unable to defeat GCU in its first and only loss of the weekend.

The first two sets of the match against Missouri State consisted of a win for each team, followed by the Bears winning their second set; however, Scheel and Bradley evened it back up by winning 21-16, 21-18 on court two. 

In the decisive game, Hill and Victoria McDonald scored the final five points of the second set to win the match for the Frogs, 3-2.

“Overall, we are very satisfied with our performance,” Guiterrez said. “The team showed a high level of competitiveness and that’s going to make us better each week.”

TCU heads out West to start spring break. The team will compete at the East Meets West Challenge against Hawaii, Southern California, Pepperdine and UCLA from March 9-10 in Los Angeles, Calif.
