TCU volleyball had chances to capitalize but ultimately fell to Iowa State on the road in three sets Wednesday night.

“We competed hard tonight the first two sets but had too many unforced errors to close out either one of those opportunities,” head coach Jill Kramer said. “Our floor defense did a good job…but we needed to anchor that with making some more positive plays at the net, both blocking and attacking.”

After Iowa State and TCU traded 4-0 runs in the first set, it looked like the Frogs found a winning combination at the net.  

Sarah Swanson and Audrey Nalls had back-to-back blocks against Iowa State attacks to put the Frogs in front 16-12, but the Cyclones stormed back to steal the set 25-23.

Nalls filled the stat sheet, finishing with a team-high three kills to go along with her three blocks and five digs in the first set. Sophomore Élan McCall, playing at libero, finished with seven digs, her season-high in a set.

TCU recorded 20 digs in the first set, a season-high for digs in a single set.

In the second set, the Cyclones got off to a fast start with an 8-3 lead, but the Frogs would win the next 10 of 15 points to tie the score, 13-13.

Although the Frogs fought towards the end of the second set, Iowa State prevailed 25-23.

Ashley Waggle (seven) and Katie Clark (six) combined for 13 of TCU’s 18 kills in the second set. Waggle recorded a hitting percentage of .700 during that time.

The Cyclones took control of the final set, preventing space for a TCU comeback. Iowa State won the final set 25-12. Nalls led the team with three kills this set. 

TCU finished with 53 digs, its most in a three-set match this season. On top of that, the Frogs hit six aces with just six service errors. This was the first time this season the team has hit the same or more aces than errors in a match.

The Horned Frogs look to end their two-match losing streak at 1 p.m. Saturday when they face off against the Kansas Jayhawks in Lawrence.
