All residents of Colby Hall have been evacuated due to excessive flooding on all floors.
First-year students Anna Grace Shaia, a fashion merchandising major, and Caroline Powell, an interior design major, said a pipe burst in the attic caused the flooding. TCU maintenance arrived at the hall and cut off the water source after about 10 minutes.
Shaia said the flooding beginning around 4:20 p.m.
“I was in there and saw on someone’s Snapchat private story that the third floor had a droplet of water coming from the ceiling,” she said. “I was like, ‘oh man that sucks’ and went up there because Caroline lives up there.”
Shaia said when she arrived on the third floor it was much worse than the video made it seem.
“The ceiling panels falling down because they were so moist and there was water falling into half inch puddles,” she said.
Powell was in class at this time so Shaia said she tried to enter Powell’s room to salvage her belongings before the water entered her room.
Powell’s roommate arrived at the room, and Shaia said she went in and began collecting her friend’s belongings to bring into her room on the first floor, which was water free at this time.
She said when she exited Powell’s room there was a half inch of water covering the entire hallway. She said when she went back to grab more of Powell’s things, there was water seeping through the ceiling.
After learning what was happening in her room, Powell quickly headed for her dorm.
“I just walked right out of my classroom in the middle of class and started grabbing everything I could fit in duffle bags,” she said.
As of 6:20 pm, residents were let in one at a time for two minutes to grab as many of their belongings as they are able in the short time.
Sororities are setting up cots and offering overnight housing for their first-year members as-well as other non-Greek affiliated Colby residents.
