No. 2 TCU men’s tennis secured its seventh consecutive ITA Indoor National Championship berth with a commanding 4-1 win against No. 17 Michigan State at the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center.
The Horned Frogs, led by stellar performances in both doubles and singles, improved their record to 5-0 this season.
The doubles matches showcased the talent and tenacity of both teams early on. Jack Pinnington and Cooper Woestendick gave TCU an early lead with a decisive 6-2 victory on court two. Michigan State edged out Duncan Chan and Albert Pedrico in a nail-biting 7-6(4) loss.
The deciding final doubles match on court one didn’t disappoint. TCU’s NCAA doubles champions, Lui Maxted and Pedro Vives faced a resilient Michigan State duo of Ozan Baris and Aristotelis Thanos. The No. 2 ranked Horned Frog pair took an early 5-2 lead over Baris and Thanos until the Spartans pair won three straight games. The match was sent to a tiebreaker after two games were split. Following their doubles win on Sunday, Maxted and Vives remain undefeated against ranked opponents in the 2024-25 season.

Last season’s NCAA Tournament Most Outstanding Player, Pinnington, squared off against ITA preseason No. 1, Baris. Winning in straight sets, Pinnington took down Baris and now boasts a record of 31-8 in ‘ranked vs. ranked’ outings.
Michigan State claimed its lone point of the day on court four, where No. 40 Matthew Forbes outlasted Chan in a grueling three-set battle, 6-3, 2-6, 6-4.
The match was clinched on court two, where TCU’s No. 9 Vives outperformed No. 27 Thanos in another three-set thriller. Vives bounced back from a second-set loss to seal the victory, 6-4, 4-6, 6-3.
With the win against Michigan State, TCU advances to the ITA Indoor National Championship for the seventh straight year. In 2023, TCU became the seventh program in tournament history to win back-to-back championships.
The Frogs’ next challenge comes on Feb. 2, when they travel to Knoxville to face No. 14 Tennessee.
