TCU men’s basketball rallied at home against West Virginia to secure a 65-60 win. The Mountaineers shot better than the Frogs, but made the difference in an unlikely stat: free throws.
The Frogs shot 87% from the line, making 20 of 23 buckets, compared to WVU’s 40%, making two of only five free throws.
Turnovers poisoned TCU’s momentum early, recording nine in the first 10 minutes of play. These mistakes created 14 WVU points. A few Mountaineer three’s allowed them to extend their lead to nine points with 8:26 left in the first.
With just over three minutes left in the half, a made jumper from Vasean Allette sparked a TCU scoring run, bringing the team within one at halftime, 29-28.
Each team’s performance in the first half was even, both struggled to score. TCU shot 35% from the field and made two of seven threes. West Virginia shot slightly better at 38%.
Noah Reynolds led the half in scoring with 11 points, making three-of-four shots from the field and four of five free throws. He finished the game with 20 points.
Down one entering the final 20 minutes, TCU opened on a 7-0 scoring run to put them over the Mountaineers. Reynolds got hot from scoring, accounting for seven points to extend its lead to nearly 10 at the 13:16 mark, 42-36.
Allette got hot from range, shooting three of six from the field in the second half, totaling a game- and team-leading 22 points.
With under five minutes left, West Virginia capitalized on a lengthy TCU scoring drought and went on a 10-0 run to climb within one of the Horned Frogs.
Scoring went back and forth as the game closed: TCU would go up by two, then WVU would answer to tie it up. A layup from Allette kickstarted a TCU scoring streak that gave it a 63-58 lead with under five seconds left.
After West Virginia missed free throws to climb within three, Allette iced the win by banking two free throws.
TCU will travel to Ames, Iowa to face the No. 8 Iowa State Cyclones on Saturday, Feb. 8. Tipoff is set for 11 a.m. CDT on ESPN+.
