Students living in car win third place in nationwide Chevorlet challenge

The sidewalk adjacent to the Mary Couts Burnett Library is bare once again after two students moved out of the car parked there as part of last week's Chevrolet Aveo Challenge.Chris Qualls, a junior communications major, and Cohlby Youtsey, a senior middle school education major, placed third in Chevrolet's Aveo Challenge, where they were required to live in a 2007 Chevy Aveo from 10 a.m. Oct. 30 to Nov. 3 at 11 p.m. central time.

Students unlikely to vote in election, believe vote doesn’t count, poll says

Turn on the TV or take a look at a newspaper this week and all you'll see is election, election, election. From bumper stickers on cars, to signs stuck in lawns, even "Facebook" has a section for "campaign issues" this fall, the upcoming midterm elections seem to be everywhere.

Everywhere that is, except TCU.

"I didn't even know there was an election on Tuesday," said senior nutrition major Jennifer Gitchell. "What are we voting for?"

Ranch program to grant 1st degree

In one month, Paxton Motheral will become the first student to receive a bachelor's degree from TCU's ranch management program.Motheral first enrolled at TCU as a finance major and planned to receive certification from the ranch management program because his family is involved in the ranching industry.

TCU began offering a degree in ranch management in 2004, but before applying for the degree, students must first complete TCU's university core curriculum requirements, said Kerry Cornelius, director of the ranch management program.

Although a resolution on the plus/minus grading system was not reached, a vice chancellor said all who attended Monday's forum have a better understanding about the issue.The plus/minus forum in the Student Center Ballrom let students speak face-to-face with faculty members about the plus/minus system.

"Faculty has tried so hard to put this together," said Justin Brown, a sophomore political science major. "They adjusted their schedules, and the high number of faculty in attendance shows that they really do care about student interests."

The H20 Frogs are using Saturday's meet against the BYU Cougars as a way to guage their performance going into the start of conference competitions, said head coach Richard Sybesma.Led by senior distance swimmer Alejandro Gomez and senior sprinter Erica Tate, the Frogs were able to muster 169.5 points against the Cougars aquatic powerhouse.

"They have an advantage getting to train at altitude," Gomez said, "but I felt good, and we had some good races."

The Horned Frogs (17-12 overall, 5-9 conference) faced another 3 game loss against No. 18 BYU Cougars (20-4 overall, 10-3 conference) Saturday night.The Frogs fell short at the beginning of game one and started to climb back up with 12-17. Lauren Otto served three straight aces and there were several kills by Nirelle Hampton and Kourtney Edwards. The Cougars kept their lead however with several blocks with the final score of 30-22.

The smell of an upset was in the air Friday night as the Horned Frogs (17-11 overall, 5-8 conference) nearly beat the No. 9 Utah Utes (21-2 overall, 12-0 conference).The Frogs lost 3 games to 1, but the performance on the court was not necessarily indicative of the final outcome, said Prentice Lewis head coach.

"Utah has a fantastic program, and we played really well," Lewis said, "We came out and played hard."

Leading the Frogs through the match was freshman outside hitter Lauren Otto with 21 points.

"Flu season usually begins in October and ends in February," Adams said. "Getting a vaccine is very helpful."

Many American college students blow off the opportunity to do something people on the other side of the world risk their lives to do.Tuesday is Election Day, and unfortunately, students who are eligible to vote in Tarrant County may treat it no differently than any other day of the year.

That's a shame.

The deadline for registration has long since passed, and if you did not register, you lost your chance to vote and your right to complain about the candidate who is elected.

The women's swimming and diving team was defeated in a close meet against the Colorado State Rams on Wednesday night in the University Recreation Center.The Rams stole the win in the Frogs' first Mountain West Conference meet with just an 11-point lead.

Head coach Richard Sybesma said overall the Frogs swam well against Colorado State (4-0 in conference meets) and, while he said he expected to win, his team still fought hard.

"It's not that we lost to a team that's not on our level," Sybesma said.

Looking for Rebel defeat

The Horned Frogs (5-2 overall and 1-2 in conference) will be trying to even their conference record and extend their winning streak to three games when they visit the UNLV Rebels on Saturday afternoon.Last season, the Frogs beat the Rebels (1-7, 0-4) 51-3 in Fort Worth.

This will be the first trip to UNLV for the Frogs since their 41-18 victory in 1998. The Frogs lead the all-time series 3-1.

One of the keys to last weekend's 26-3 win versus Wyoming was the offense, which looked aggressive, said Gary Patterson, head coach.
