Over the weekend, the Horned Frog volleyball team went 2-1 in a tournament at the University Recreation Center that was cut short by Hurricane Rita's anticipated arrival.The team fell to Winthrop on Friday in five sets as the Eagles fought through tough competition to claim victory.

Sophomore LeMeita Smith led the Frogs to a win in game one with her five kills and one block.

Game two began with three straight aces by Anna Vaughn, but the Eagles quickly recovered to win the game, with Taryn Surbaugh and Mary Hock combining for nine kills and 2.5 blocks.

While NASA's plan to return to the moon is commendable, its methods lack the spirit of exploration and adventure, which characterized the original Apollo program - a true failure of the American spirit.NASA plans to launch its shuttle replacement and primary craft for lunar missions, the Crew Exploration Vehicle, in 2014. The CEV is a reusable craft that will take off atop a booster rocket and will land with retro-rockets and parachutes in much the same way as the Apollo capsules landed.

Once upon a time, a boy would ask a girl on an official date, she would dress up, he would bring flowers, and at the end of the night he could only hope for a kiss at the doorstep.Fast forward to 2005, and the overuse of instant messenger, Facebook.com and the ever-elusive text-message, and dating has been diminished to an event of the past.

Any conversations at all seem limited to surroundings involving a cocktail at Snookie's or beerpong at the nearest house party. Impressing a girl has ceased entirely.

Hispanic Heritage month presents cultural issues

TCU's celebration of Hispanic Heritage month continues this week with two of three scheduled educational series hosted by faculty members. Cecilia Silva, a professor in the School of Education, will lead a discussion at noon Tuesday in the lobby of the Brown-Lupton Student Center on education in the Hispanic community.

Sophomore social work major Daisy Delgado is a member of the Hispanic Heritage month planning committee and helped organize the educational series.

TCU student-athletes and coaches have divided opinions over an increasing lack of women coaches in college athletics.As reported by The Chronicle of Higher Education, despite a growing number of female athletes, female coaches for women's sports have declined since Title IX became law in 1972. The federal legislation outlined a series of guidelines to provide equal opportunity for both women's and men's collegiate sports.

Texas Supreme Court invalidates lawsuit

Texas case law invalidates a former TCU athlete's lawsuit seeking permission to compete for the Texas Longhorns track team, according to TCU's legal response filed in state district court.According to the response, TCU is basing its defense on the Texas Supreme Court's August decision in National Collegiate Athletic Association v. Yeo. TCU claims the plaintiff has failed to present a justiciable issue, according to TCU's response.

The devastation left behind in New Orleans and the surrounding area gave sufficient cause for immediate action to be taken on the part of residents along the Texas coast when told to evacuate due to Hurricane Rita.Don Mills, vice chancellor for student affairs, said TCU was prepared to provide short-term emergency shelter in Daniel-Meyer Coliseum and the University Recreation Center.

"TCU is not designated as an emergency center, but we were ready to help any way we could had there been a catastrophe in Houston," Mills said.

TCU's annual campuswide community service project has been postponed until the spring semester because of Hurricane Rita, organizers said Monday. Forecasters predicted Rita would bring severe and dangerous weather to Fort Worth on Saturday, when the event was originally scheduled.

"We were concerned for the safety of the whole student body and campus," said Kelly O'Fallon, director of Leaders Encouraging All People to Serve, also known as LEAPS.

E-mails were sent to the more than 1,000 students registered for LEAPS to notify them of the cancellation, she said.

Rita looming: Students should take precautionsShould Hurricane Rita find her way to North Texas, there are still many dangers even if the storm surge cannot reach this far inland. It is important for all students to be prepared.

You need to know the tornado shelter plan for the building in which you live or are located at the time.

There is a risk of high, sustained winds and dangerous gusts. If the wind picks up, move to interior hallways and away from any windows.
