New Congress permeated by uncooperativeness

The midterm elections have come and gone, leaving some with renewed hope and others with a sense of despair. Above all, there is a sense of anticipation to see what the new Congress will do to help improve the lives of the American public.

At the forefront of all this waiting is the desire to see whether or not the Republicans and Democrats will finally work with each other to help move America forward, now that the GOP controls the House of Representatives and the Democrats still control the Senate.

Every week, Chancellor Victor Boschini and several student leaders pick who they think will win top upcoming college football games in the Daily Skiff college football pick 'em challenge. Last week, each participant missed the upset of Alabama vs. LSU. Student body president Marlon Figueroa and Daily Skiff sports editor Madison Pelletier had the highest score last week, going 4-1. Pelletier has the lead with the highest cumulative score at 37-13. News Now sports director Chris Blake is following closely behind at 35-15.

Eric Elsken doesn't plan on leaving Fort Worth anytime soon because of all the city has to offer.

Elsken, a freshman computer science major, said he would consider living in Fort Worth upon graduation due to its southern hospitality and job market.

"The job market here in Fort Worth is really nice, and there's no reason I wouldn't raise a family here," he said. "There's a lot to do here, and it's a fun, clean city."

Elsken isn't alone.

BestPlaces.net recently ranked Fort Worth-Arlington as No. 4 on its list of 10 best cities to relocate to in America.

A 12-hour power outage originally scheduled for Sunday has been cancelled due to conflicts with campus organizations, according to an e-mail from Assistant Director of Electrical Systems Department George Bates.

After Bates received responses that voiced conflicts with the recommended time frame of 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., the electrical shutdown was cancelled the following day, according to the e-mail.

Attempts to reach Bates and Richard Bryan, associate director of operations for the TCU Physical Plant, in time for publication were unsuccessful.

Just say no. If someone can't afford to have a kid, then he or she is not in the right state to participate in the act.

Free contraceptives could soon be available to women in the U.S., thanks to the new health care law. While some may welcome the amendment, one must ask themselves whose responsibility it is to pay for the individual choices of others. It is not the moral or legal responsibility of Americans to provide free birth control.

J. Lynn Kelly, a studio art major at TCU, was announced as the winner of the Fifth Annual Catholic Foundation Plaza Artists Competition for his piece titled "Downtown Playground." Growing up, Kelly said he always loved when people admired his creations, and he now takes his own personal experiences as inspiration for his art. Although Kelly initially worked in the printing business and stayed there for 30 years, he has been a full-time artist for the past six years. "Downtown Playground," which highlights the Dallas Arts District, will be displayed for a year.

The university's efforts to "go green' in the past year have not been overlooked, as shown by an improved grade on The College Sustainability Report Card released at the end of October.

Issued by the Sustainable Endowments Institute, an organization which advocates and researches campus involvement in sustainability, the institute gave the university a B- for 2011, a full letter-grade improvement from the C- it received in 2010.
