Students to head Meals on Wheels campus organization

Students and staff members are working together to bring the Meals on Wheels program to campus, expecting to establish an official student organization by this spring.

University faculty and staff have had a Meals on Wheels program for some time, said Melissa Gruver, coordinator for Community Involvement and a member of AmeriCorps VISTA, a national service program to fight poverty. When students expressed interest in participating, Gruver said she jumped at the chance to involve students.

Yes, it's that time of the year: Oct. 2-4 is the Austin City Limits Music Festival, the weekend when thousands of audiophiles unite in central Texas to hear their favorite bands and discover new ones as they weave in and out of crowds and consciousness. Scour eBay or become best friends with a scalper, because it's not too late for a spontaneous road trip and music-filled weekend.

2005 SMU upset still fresh on minds

After a big win on the road, TCU will defend its winning streak against the Southern Methodist University Mustangs in the 89th Battle for the Iron Skillet on Saturday.

The Horned Frogs and Mustangs will face off in Amon G. Carter stadium at 7 p.m.



The series began in 1915 with a 43-0 TCU victory. The Horned Frogs won the last six home games against SMU and hold a 42-39-7 advantage over the Mustangs.



In 2008, TCU defeated SMU 48-7 with two touchdowns by tailback Joseph Turner. Turner rushed for 67 yards against the Mustangs last season.

Senior Andrea Dean had always been an animal lover, but when two friends gave her a yellow lab puppy last year she realized how important proper animal training could be, especially while sharing her time and space with two other roommates. Dean said she quickly realized instilling good manners in her dog, Lili, from an early age would be the key to a happy and comfortable life in her duplex near campus.

Is "Twilight" unrealistic romantic drivel, sending false hope to teenage girls everywhere about the complexities of love? I don't think so. People that think the series is cheesy are just plain cynical.

Yes, Bella becomes very passive around Edward. But isn't that what most women do when they are in love? Don't the men that capture our hearts become huge, almost ridiculous parts of our world?

Vehicle break-ins reported in soccer stadium lot

Two vehicles parked in the soccer stadium parking lot were broken into Monday, a TCU Police official said.

TCU Police Lt. Ramiro Abad said personal items were taken from the cars sometime Monday afternoon.



The owners reported the theft to the TCU Police when they came back to their cars that afternoon, Abad said. They were missing personal property, he said. Abad declined to elaborate on what was stolen.



There are no suspects for the break-ins, Abad said.



Abad said he could not give the names of the victims.

Speaker: Marijuana should be legalized

Students gathered to witness a rare site - a retired federal agent, cowboy and self-proclaimed Republican promoting the legalization of drugs in Palko Hall on Tuesday night.

The Department of Criminal Justice invited Terry Nelson, a retired group adviser for the Department of Homeland Security and executive board member and director of training for Law Enforcement Against Prohibition, to address members of the campus community. About 90 people were in attendance.

Sherley Hall installs movie theater for residents

After a $16 million renovation, Sherley Hall returned this semester with substantial upgrades for residents ranging from a baking center to lounges with pool and foosball tables, but most notably a movie theater in the basement, a university official said.

Director of Residential Services Craig Allen said the idea of a movie theater popped up during renovation. The building had extra space in the basement after the renovation.



"We got student feedback, and they loved the idea," Allen said. "Architects drew it up, and now we have it in place."

Admission officers deny ‘friending’ prospective students

A recent survey by Kaplan Test Prep and Admissions revealed that 71 percent of admissions officers at some of the nation's top universities have received MySpace or Facebook friend requests from prospective students seeking a competitive edge, but admissions staff at the university said they do not respond to such requests while the student's admission status is still pending.

Lauren Nixon, an admissions counselor with a Facebook page, said that she, as well at least three or four other admissions counselors, has received friend requests from prospective students.

Professor named co-editor of noted marketing journal

A business professor is bringing recognition to the university through his involvement in a prestigious marketing academic journal, a Neeley official said.

Robert P. Leone, a marketing professor at the Neeley School of Business, was named co-editor of the Journal of Marketing this summer and began the position Sept. 1.



Bill Moncrief, senior associate dean of the Neeley School of Business, said it's outstanding for the university to have an editor from this journal on campus.
