Published Sep 30, 2009

Coming off an emotional win at Clemson University last Saturday, the Horned Frog football team enters its fourth week of play against the Southern Methodist University Mustangs. The primary topic of discussion in Tuesday's media luncheon with head coach Gary Patterson was the striking similarity in the sequence of this season and the 2005 season.

Once you clear the confetti, turn off the synthesizers, sweep up the glitter and turn down the lights - then you can judge the raw talent and personality of musicians.

Following the Dave Matthews Band's lively and ecstatic concert in Los Angeles that seemed to sway the crowd with a sense of unity and passion, CNN caught up with Dave Matthews right when former President Jimmy Carter's allegations hit the press.

Twilight a danger to young women everywhere

I'd like to snap my fingers in the faces of the general public. You are glorifying a book about a vampire who knocks up his 18-year-old wife and takes over her existence.

That said, I wouldn't insult something I haven't read. I did read the first two books of the "Twilight" series, skimmed the third and looked up a summary of the fourth book online. And I kept asking was, "Why?"

Twilight romance not too far from reality

Twilight romance not too far from reality

Is "Twilight" unrealistic romantic drivel, sending false hope to teenage girls everywhere about the complexities of love? I don't think so. People that think the series is cheesy are just plain cynical.

Yes, Bella becomes very passive around Edward. But isn't that what most women do when they are in love? Don't the men that capture our hearts become huge, almost ridiculous parts of our world?

Vehicle break-ins reported in soccer stadium lot

Published Sep 30, 2009

Two vehicles parked in the soccer stadium parking lot were broken into Monday, a TCU Police official said.

TCU Police Lt. Ramiro Abad said personal items were taken from the cars sometime Monday afternoon.

The owners reported the theft to the TCU Police when they came back to their cars that afternoon, Abad said. They were missing personal property, he said. Abad declined to elaborate on what was stolen.

There are no suspects for the break-ins, Abad said.

Abad said he could not give the names of the victims.

The Department of Criminal Justice invited Terry Nelson, a retired group adviser for the Department of Homeland Security and executive board member and director of training for Law Enforcement Against Prohibition, to address members of the campus community. About 90 people were in attendance.

Sherley Hall installs movie theater for residents

Published Sep 30, 2009

After a $16 million renovation, Sherley Hall returned this semester with substantial upgrades for residents ranging from a baking center to lounges with pool and foosball tables, but most notably a movie theater in the basement, a university official said.

Director of Residential Services Craig Allen said the idea of a movie theater popped up during renovation. The building had extra space in the basement after the renovation.

"We got student feedback, and they loved the idea," Allen said. "Architects drew it up, and now we have it in place."

Q&A: Senior soccer player uses passion on field

Published Sep 29, 2009

Senior Lizzy Karoly has taken on a leadership role as one of just three seniors on the Horned Frog soccer team. Karoly took the school's all-time goals scored record on Sept. 6 in a match at Rice, when she netted her 25th career goal in a 2-1 win. The soccer team won two home games last weekend, 5-2 against Stephen F. Austin and 4-0 against Texas Woman's University.

Q: Because there are only three seniors on the team, how does that affect the team makeup and the seniors' roles as leaders?

Student belly dancers to start club by spring semester

Published Sep 29, 2009

A group of students is hoping to add belly dancing to the university's recreational activities for a fun workout and an interesting cultural experience.

The TCU Belly Dancing Club will try to be up and running by the spring semester, club creator and junior middle school education major Farhin Hasan wrote in an e-mail.

So far the club has two advisers from the music department, administrative assistant in the School of Music Sue Ott and Web services coordinator Kristi Kolpanen, who are belly dancing enthusiasts, Hasan wrote.

Marching band deserves funding for game travel

Published Sep 29, 2009

Dressed head-to-toe in purple, white and black, performing what they have practiced for weeks, these Horned Frogs know what it's like to sweat.

No, not the football team, but our beloved band. Long sleeves, gloves, dress pants, furry hats and a relatively heavy instrument are the perfect elements for an uncomfortably hot experience. Yet they are there in full, every home game, to make it noisier, louder and more spirited.

They lift school spirit for free, yet no one could pay to give them a lift to the football game at Clemson University this past weekend.

BCS spotlight not distracting Frogs after Clemson win

BCS spotlight not distracting Frogs after Clemson win

Published Sep 29, 2009

Despite the Frogs' move up to 11th in the Associated Press top 25 poll, head coach Gary Patterson said he is not letting his players "drink that BCS Kool-Aid."

After beating Clemson in Death Valley 14-10, the Frogs moved up four spots from No. 15 to No. 11 this week in the AP poll and from No. 14 to No. 10 in the USA Today rankings. However, even just right after celebrating a huge win toward the Frogs' post-season opportunities, Patterson's players were still focused on the small, game-to-game picture.
