Cable giant and TV provider conflict keeps games from campus viewers

Students living on campus lost access to coverage of several major sports leagues Monday because of a negotiations impasse between the owner of sports network Versus and its provider on campus.

Versus, a cable sports network owned by cable giant Comcast, specializes in providing coverage of college football, and niche sports like the National Hockey League and World Extreme Cagefighting.

University should have been prepared for influx of incoming freshmen

With the admittance of 1,824 freshmen, about 200 more freshmen than an average fall semester entry, the university has leaped over its record breaker and really made an impact on the student population.

Such a large increase of new students means many more opportunities for students to interact with different personalities, cultures and attitudes, thus strengthening our role as ethical leaders in a global community.

More than 1,800 incoming freshmen are attending the university this year, which is the highest incoming class in the school's history, a university official said.

Ray Brown, dean of admissions, said the exact number of the incoming class will not be known until the 12th day of the semester, which is the official census date.



"Right now we have about 1,824 (freshmen), but I think we will lose five students between now and the 12th day," Brown said.

SGA discusses new tailgating policy

During the Student Government Association's House of Student Representatives meeting Tuesday, representatives discussed the new tailgate policy, future events and available SGA positions.



Students who want to bring a guest to tailgates must register by noon on the Friday before each football game, said Kelsie Johnson, student body president. Johnson said interested students should go to tailgates.tcu.edu and click student registration.

Football ticket sales rise with committee support

The football team may see more fans in the stands this season because of the efforts of a new committee, a university official said.

Scott Kull, associate athletics director for external operations, said current season ticket sales are higher than they were this time last year, though he did not know the exact number of season tickets sold. About 13,500 season tickets were sold last year, he said.

I had heard of the atrocities carried out by Westboro Baptist Church and its bigoted pastor Fred Phelps before.

I knew that the church had been picketing at fallen soldiers' funerals, holding signs with "Thank God for dead soldiers" and "God hates the USA," written on them.



But it wasn't until 2005, when Phelps and his more than 70 followers came to my hometown to protest a soldier's death, that I realized the extent of the controversy.



I had never had to face a national scandal like that before.

Volleyball falls to Bears in fifth set

The TCU women's volleyball team followed up their opening weekend of the season with a disappointing loss against the rival Baylor Bears Tuesday.

The Horned Frogs are now 2-2 in their season, while the Bears remain undefeated. The high energy game was well-attended and started out with a close first set, but the Bears came out on top 28 to 26. The Horned Frogs followed up the disappointing first set with two winning sets.
