After accepting an invitation to be a part of the regional spelling bee, TCU's College of Education will join the Fort Worth Star-Telegram to co-host the Star-Telegram Regional Championship Spelling Bee.

Mary Patton, dean of the College of Education, said the Star-Telegram invited TCU to participate, and the university accepted the offer.

"When we were approached with it, we were very excited about it," Patton said. "We think this is one way to support our young readers and writers and spellers in the state."

According to Ted Legatski, associate professor of professional practice in management,

an entrepreneur is committed, confident and comfortable with risk.

Legatski said there are five key areas an entrepreneur should consider.

1. Personal 2. Idea 3. Competition 4. Resources 5. Nuts and bolts

An entrepreneur's first step is a serious personal evaluation with tough, forward-thinking questions.

Searching for the elusive snitch and avoiding bludger-slinging beaters, students at TCU and across the country are zooming around on broomsticks, and having a lot of fun doing it.

Quidditch, inspired by the Harry Potter series of books and movies by J.K. Rowling, combines basketball, soccer and dodgeball.

Lindsey Carnes, sophomore psychology major, founded the Quidditch club last Fall.

Carnes said she wasn't sure what to expect when she started the club, but has been pleasantly surprised.

"Our first tournament we had 10 teams sign up," Carnes said.

TCU outfielders shine in 9-1 victory Sunday

For a Jim Schlossnagle coached team, its lifeblood is its defense. Sunday afternoon his players put on a clinic in a 9-1 victory over University of Houston.

This season the Frogs' defense is best in the outfield. Juniors Brance Rivera (right field), Aaron Schultz (center field) and Jason Coats (left field) combine to make one of the best defensive outfields in the country.

Sunday afternoon, Rivera and Schultz both made diving catches to save at least one run each.

I play TCU Rugby. Rugby is a bit like this article: Hard-hitting and not always pretty 8212; but hopefully by the time it's over, generally entertaining .

Yes, we are a "club" sport, but we're not JUST a club sport. We are soldiers wearing purple and black, defending TCU. And in a combative white-knuckle sport like rugby, pain is as much a part of the game as the field or the ball. Your classmates on the rugby team have suffered blown knees, broken collarbones, cracked ribs, concussions and more on the rugby field. But it's for a sport that we love and we've chosen to play.

Fashion often reflects social shifts. The luxury market was hit hard by the recession, and it showed in the dark colors and warrior themes designers have favored in recent years.

In the fall of 2009, designers were portraying a strong woman who was protecting herself and preparing to fight. Female empowerment was depicted by helmets, built-out shoulders and heavy, metal chains. Rather than innovate, designers focused on brand DNA and strengthening the loyalty of their clientele.

Americans shouldn’t turn blind eye to foreign disaster

Published Mar 28, 2011

As President Barack Obama spoke to the nation last night about the nation's involvement in Libya, he commented on how Americans cannot turn a blind eye to atrocities and disasters around the world when we have the opportunity to provide assistance, and he's right.

Even though we have an economy that is in a recession, a housing market on a shaky foundation, high unemployment, numerous social issues like abortion and gay marriage and the constant threat of terrorism, American citizens still have a pretty good life.

TCU and the community, match made in heaven…most of the time

Published Mar 28, 2011

When TCU moved to Fort Worth it was a fledgling university of less than 500 students in a city of 73,000. In the century since, the two have grown hand-in-hand to more than 9,000 students in a city of almost a quarter-million people.

Rocky Deutscher has lived in the TCU community for more than 20 years. Her husband recently retired from the university and the couple is very active at the university and with their neighborhood association in University West.
