Fashion often reflects social shifts. The luxury market was hit hard by the recession, and it showed in the dark colors and warrior themes designers have favored in recent years.

In the fall of 2009, designers were portraying a strong woman who was protecting herself and preparing to fight. Female empowerment was depicted by helmets, built-out shoulders and heavy, metal chains. Rather than innovate, designers focused on brand DNA and strengthening the loyalty of their clientele.

Published Mar 28, 2011

This week, students can attempt to live off of five dollars for 24 hours, get free hot dogs and peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, and try to solve world hunger through the activities and fundraisers for TCU's 29th annual Hunger Week, a university official said.

The Rev. Jeremy Albers, associate chaplain of the Office of Religious and Spiritual Life, said the goal of Hunger Week was to help create hunger awareness locally, nationally and globally.

Americans shouldn’t turn blind eye to foreign disaster

Published Mar 28, 2011

As President Barack Obama spoke to the nation last night about the nation's involvement in Libya, he commented on how Americans cannot turn a blind eye to atrocities and disasters around the world when we have the opportunity to provide assistance, and he's right.

Even though we have an economy that is in a recession, a housing market on a shaky foundation, high unemployment, numerous social issues like abortion and gay marriage and the constant threat of terrorism, American citizens still have a pretty good life.

TCU and the community, match made in heaven…most of the time

Published Mar 28, 2011

When TCU moved to Fort Worth it was a fledgling university of less than 500 students in a city of 73,000. In the century since, the two have grown hand-in-hand to more than 9,000 students in a city of almost a quarter-million people.

Rocky Deutscher has lived in the TCU community for more than 20 years. Her husband recently retired from the university and the couple is very active at the university and with their neighborhood association in University West.

Students express themselves through lyrical poetry

Tears won't part

The tears won't part

As the dam restrains-

Flood.

Blinking, lids are

sandpaper grains.

Your words slice and

Pierce through vein,

Should stab you with shame.

Bloodshot, curtains of my eyes-

Fall.

Excerpt from 'together'

Is my mind really all in my head?

A residence of logic and reason hardly seems a fitting place

for an imagination.

Students help clean up Trinity River via canoe, kayak

The Trinity River may be full of trash, but Steve Campbell, assistant director of campus recreation and outdoor programs, said he means to change that.

Campbell said he started the Trinity River Cleanup this year, which gave students the opportunity to canoe or kayak down the West Fork of the river while picking up trash and debris along the way Saturday. The event was part of the TCU LEAPS program, in which students, faculty and alumni help with community service projects around the city.

A word from real life: Women

A word from real life: Women

Published Mar 28, 2011

What do women want? Women. Want. Men. This age-old question has plagued philosophers and Ph.D.'s, although the guy from Hitch seemed to grasp it. The concept is strikingly obvious, yet it boggles every boy's brain.

This concept, of women wanting men, is unclear to guys because they are confused about the definition of "want" and the definition of "man." Man, defined: when frat snapping turns into wine sipping, excuses turn into emotions and playing PS2 turns into catering to PMS, a woman knows a boy has turned into a man.

Andrew McCollough graduated from TCU in '05 with a degree in education 8212; but he's not a teacher.

Before he can think about standing in the front of a classroom, he said he has to preach against the grind by rhyming his truth and embracing his life.

After graduation he fell into a job trading stocks for two years before realizing he was happiest writing rap.

"I graduated school, I got a job, I quit my job," Dru said. "Left all the money I was makin'."

Dru said pursuing his music is about risk and sacrificing to do what makes you happiest.
