Vegans have it rough in Cowtown

Vegans have it rough in Cowtown

Published Jan 25, 2008

In the middle of October, Jonathan Combs, a senior graphic design major, vowed to go a month without eating any product that came from an animal.

He agreed to be a vegan for a month as a part of a documentary film by TCU's radio-TV-film students.

Combs and many other vegans around Fort Worth said maintaining a vegan lifestyle in Cowtown is more difficult than it should be.

"It's probably harder than most other cities," Combs said. "But for the most part you can find places that are willing to accommodate you even if they don't know why."

Earlier this month, Charles Chatman, a man convicted in Dallas County of rape and sentenced to 99 years in prison, was exonerated and released based on DNA evidence. Chatman served more than 26 years behind bars.

The judge who granted his release took Chatman out for a steak dinner - a small gesture, but a signal of growing interest among some Texans in providing justice, not just convictions.

Letter to the editor: Students should park on campus

Published Jan 25, 2008

I live two blocks from the TCU campus. Our houses have single-car driveways.

Many of us park one car in the driveway and one on the street to keep from shuffling cars around all the time. We are further hampered by having parking on only one side of the street on weekdays.

The parking problem is made worse by students who chew up the available parking. This would not be so bad if they parked in the morning and removed their cars at the end of the day. Many times, though, they come in the evenings, park and leave their cars for three to seven days at a time.

Letter to the editor: Tradition, history not grounds for animal abuse

Published Jan 24, 2008

We want to clarify our position as protesters of the rodeo and the exploitative non-human entertainment industry at large.

We feel that given the facts of the inevitable deaths and provocative means that ensure a performance for humans' amusement, there is no way to justify non-humans' forced involvement in such barbaric activities. We view the rodeo as exploitative, since the non-humans exist as expendable entities to draw in ticket sales.

100-calorie packs not as healthy as they seem

Published Jan 24, 2008

As usual, promises to lose weight and be healthier have begun ringing in the New Year.

And this year numerous convenience products decorate grocery store shelves, advertising themselves as healthy, nutritious snacks.

The "100-calorie pack" has jumped on the scene as the super-hero, quick-fix food. Don't get me wrong; I myself enjoy these tasty treats, but you should take caution when surrounded by the brightly colored boxes and the hopes of a sinless snack.
