Cost of college barely rivals benefits

Published Feb 8, 2011

Is college worth it? It depends. From a purely financial point of view, a college degree trumps a mere high school diploma without a doubt. In early 2010, the U.S. Census Bureau estimated the average...

Frogs return home Wednesday

Frogs return home Wednesday

Published Feb 8, 2011

The Frogs return home to Daniel-Meyer Coliseum on Wednesday to face the University of Nevada-Las Vegas.

Although TCU has lost its last six games, the Frogs were able to play a close game against No. 6 San Diego State on Saturday. TCU came within five points with less than two minutes remaining in the game and only lost by seven on the road at SDSU, 60-53. UNLV is the only other team that has played the Aztecs in a tighter game this season.

Head coach Jim Christian said that even though the game resulted in a loss, the team walked away proud of the game it played.

Mavs can’t count on Stojakovic

Published Feb 8, 2011

The Dallas Mavericks hoped that veteran forward Peja Stojakovic would become a cheap, easy and effective option to fill the roster void that former all-star Caron Butler's season-ending knee injury left. On paper, Stojakovic is a seasoned player with playoff experience who has been known for his perimeter shooting and timely offense throughout his 12-year career.

Sorry Mark Cuban. At this point, the Mavs need to understand that Stojakovic is not an asset to the team, but a liability.

More ice expected Wednesday

Published Feb 7, 2011

More winter weather is in the forecast for the Dallas/Fort Worth area this week. After almost a week of snow and ice on the ground in North Texas, ice accumulation is expected once again this Wednesday.

According to meteorologist Amber Elliott with the National Weather Service in Fort Worth, precipitation should start late Tuesday evening and start to freeze when the cold air rolls in around midnight Tuesday.

Time off should be used wisely

Published Feb 7, 2011

After a week of winter weather that caused four days of canceled classes, the university is almost back to normal.

Missing four days in a semester that only has 70 days of normal class time is a lot, but the cancellations were unavoidable. Student, faculty and staff safety should be the most important consideration when determining whether to keep the university open, and in this case it looks like the university made the right call.

Busted pipe in Sid Rich causes technological services outages

The TCU computer mainframe located in the Sid W. Richardson Building was affected by a burst pipe in the building's basement Thursday morning due to freezing temperatures, resulting in outages in the university's technological services such as my.tcu.edu, TCU e-mail accounts, servers and the main TCU website.

With eight inches of water under the floorboards where the electrical wires are located, Josh Harmon, director of enterprise application services, said it was surprising the server was recovered by Saturday morning.

Transforming snow days is unfair

Published Feb 7, 2011

Snow 8212; this magical word doubles as a wonder of nature and as a day of freedom. As a kid, and even as a college student, when there is any mention of snow or ice, I hope that I will wake up to a winter wonderland and that school will be canceled.

As much as I am fond of the occasional spontaneous day of freedom, I know that with virtually all things come consequences. For the Mississinawa Valley School District in Ohio, the idea of freedom on a snow day has transformed entirely.

TCU recruiting class ranked 23rd by Scout.com

Published Feb 7, 2011

TCU is no longer fighting for the recruiting scraps left over from the UTs and OUs of the football world. While most of the campus was frozen last week, TCU announced 24 football signings last Wednesday 8212; that was good enough to be ranked 23rd by Scout.com and 25th by Rivals.com, the first time TCU has had a top-25 ranked recruiting class. TCU also added a 25th player, defensive tackle Davion Pierson, to the recruiting class Monday. Pierson, of Oklahoma City, was rated by Rivals.com as the No. 1 defensive tackle prospect in Oklahoma.
