College of Fine Arts searches for new director

Published Jan 25, 2011

The College of Fine Arts is searching for a replacement for the director of the School of Art, who will retire at the end of this semester.

Scott Sullivan, dean of the College of Fine Arts, said the college has received around 10 applications for the position as the School of Art Director.

"The search committee has zeroed in on three [applicants] and they are now checking references," Sullivan said. "Then they are going to do a phone interview for those people to see if they are the kinds of people that we want to pursue and bring to campus for more interviews."

Students should watch the State of the Union address

Published Jan 25, 2011

It may seem counterproductive to ask college students to watch President Barack Obama's State of the Union address tonight considering the state of the job market.

But whether students are into politics or not, watching the address is one of the easiest ways to stay up to date with our most pressing issues.

In a representative democracy, our personal contribution is our vote. By taking the time to access information to which we have a right, we can better dictate where our vote would be best used.

Café Brazil to open under the GrandMarc

Published Jan 25, 2011

Award-winning Café Brazil will open its first Tarrant County restaurant in place of Los Vaqueros, beneath the GrandMarc.

Brant Wood, CEO of Café Brazil, said there are 10 locations around Dallas, and he felt the restaurant's 24/7 concept is perfect for college students.

"We are known in the business for taking over failed restaurant space and converting it into a Café Brazil and being successful doing that," Wood said.

New Greek housing should be well thought-through

Published Jan 25, 2011

The Board of Trustees and the university have been discussing renovating the Greek houses on campus. Craig Allen, director of Housing & Residence Life, said the proposed plans include a common area for students as well as a new dining room. Allen also said a project of this size would take three to five years to complete.

Whatever the final design is, for the sake of the students at TCU, let's hope the school will have a well thought-out plan for construction that ensures on-campus housing for students without sacrificing several more parking spaces.

TCU will no longer play Boise State at home

Published Jan 25, 2011

The first and only conference matchup between TCU and Boise State, originally slotted to be a home game for TCU, will now be played at Boise's Bronco Stadium, according to a press release from The Mountain West Conference's Board of Directors.

The game was originally scheduled to play at Amon G. Carter Stadium for the 2011 football season.

The MWC said it approved the recommendations from the conference's athletic directors on the grounds that it would address current and future scheduling issues caused by shifts in MWC membership.

Teachers with guns: Pro

Published Jan 25, 2011

The United States is a nation living in denial, completely oblivious and willfully ignoring the reality of violence.

Fortunately, not all Americans choose to live in this state of denial. David McElwee and Bill Sandlin, two gun rights advocates and members of the National Rifle Association, took their case in favor of concealed handguns on high school campuses before the Arlington ISD school board this past week. The board, however, showed no interest to McElwee and Sandlin's proposal on Friday.

Steelers versus Packers: Cowboys had to be involved

Published Jan 24, 2011

It's only fitting the Dallas Cowboys have their hands all over the Steelers-Packers Super Bowl XLV. There seems to be one friend in every group that ends up getting the party forced upon him or her at their house. The NFL's friend would be Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones, but he'll be charging a lot more than $5 for access to the keg in the backyard and he was never exactly forced into throwing his Super Bowl party.

PepsiCo Dream Machine comes to campus

Published Jan 24, 2011

Sophomore biology major Grecia Garza said she hoped bringing a few Dream Machines to campus would provide students both the method and the incentive to recycle.

Garza gave a recycling lecture to Keith Whitworth's sustainability class about bringing a PepsiCo Dream Machine to campus.

"It is basically a vending machine in reverse," Garza said. "You scan the product with the bar code and place the plastic and/or aluminum in the proper area, and then you would get rewards."
