TAKE teaches students self defense

Any woman at TCU looking to learn self-defense skills can attend a free defense training class at 7 p.m. Wednesday in the Brown-Lupton University Union Ballroom taught by The Ali Kemp Educational Foundation.

The class will teach women safety awareness skills and hands on self-defense training, according to the TAKE Foundation's website.

Pi Beta Phi President Caroline Dixon said the event is sponsored by Pi Beta Phi, Alpha Delta Pi and Sigma Phi Epsilon.

Two weeks after the Horned Frogs defeated Wisconsin in the Rose Bowl, the excitement had not slowed down as around 6,000 TCU fans continued celebrating at the Rose Bowl Celebration at Daniel-Meyer Coliseum on Monday.

In addition to the fans and football team, Chancellor Victor Boschini, Fort Worth Mayor Mike Moncrief and members of the Rose Bowl management committee attended the celebration to honor the undefeated Horned Frogs.

Senior broadcast journalism major Ashley Melnick was one of eight contestants chosen by the judges to remain in the top 12 ofSaturday's Miss America Pageant.

Melnick,who representedTexas, along with Miss Oklahoma Emoly West; Miss Rhode Island Deborah Saint-Vil; Miss Utah Christina Lowe; Miss Washington Jacquie Brown; Miss Arizona Kathryn Bulkley; Miss Virginia Caitlin Uze, and Miss California Arianna Afsar; Miss Arkansas Alyse Eady; Miss Hawaii Jalee Fuselier and Miss Nebraska Teresa Scanlan were the judges eight selections for the final 12.

‘Apprentice’ contestant welcomed home

The cafeteria of Castleberry High School was filled with people of all ages to welcome home alumnus Clint RobertsonThursday.

A live band played while the 1988 graduate talked to his former classmates from Castleberry High and TCU as well as his family and the public.

When the chatter stopped, the welcome home reception began. The Castleberry band and cheerleaders performed their fight song and alma mater.

After the band and cheerleaders marched out of the area, Leigh Melton, president of Castleberry High School Exes Association, spoke.

Last week, the TCU men's swimming and diving team lost their first Mountain West conference meet in nearly two years at UNLV.

But Saturday, the team got back to their winning ways beating Utah and leading the entire match en route to a 171-123 victory at the University Recreation Center Natatorium. With the win the Frogs improved their record to 3-1 overall and 3-1 in conference play.

The women's teamalso won, 166-131. They too were coming off a loss to UNLV but had little trouble with the Utes, trailing only after the first race.

Despite committing a season-high 24 turnovers, the TCU Lady Frogs forced 31 Colorado State turnovers and sprinted past the Rams Saturday afternoon, 66-40. The win marked the Lady Frogs' sixth straight and gave TCU its best start in conference play since 2005.

TCU (12-6, 4-0 MWC) was led by senior forward Emily Carter with 20 points, including six three-pointers. Carter, who was 0 for 7 from three-point range on Jan. 12 against Wyoming, said she had to adjust her shot.

TCU Rifle takes on Air Force Sunday

The TCU women's rifle team hopes to extend its 18-game winning streak when it competes against Air Force Sunday at the USAFA Cadet Rifle Range.

"We were ranked number one based upon the scores that were fired in the fall," head rifle coach Karen Monez said. "Now there's still a lot of shooting ahead of us in the next month, but we finished in a good spot at the end of the fall semester."

While many students were enjoying winter break, members of the rifle team were practicing their shooting technique and keeping up their skills.

The swimming & diving team members know they still have an outside shot at a Mountain West Conference co-championship, but they must defeat Utah on Saturday at noon in the University Recreation Center Natatorium to give themselves a chance.

After dropping a dual meet at UNLV for the first time in nearly two years Friday, the Frogs must hope UNLV slips up against Wyoming or Air Force in its remaining conference meets.

Rose Bowl celebration scheduled

The university will host a Rose Bowl celebration on Sunday in Daniel-Meyer Coliseum. The event will honor the football team's Rose Bowl win January 1, and their first undefeated season since 1938.

Although the celebration will take place two weeks after the Rose Bowl game, Athletics Media Relations Director Mark Cohen said the celebration will be for the TCU community after everyone has returned from Christmas break.

"If you are going to do some type of celebration you obviously want your student body to be a big part of it," Cohen said.

That would have been the case during the Thursday funeral of 9-year-old Christina Taylor Green, who was killed in the attack on Rep. Gabrielle Giffords last Saturday in Tucson, Ariz. But radio stations in Arizona and Canada offered airtime for Westboro Baptist Church so the church would not picket the funeral, according to a story by the AP.
