Day of service embodies King’s vision

Published Jan 19, 2011

On the 25th anniversary of Martin Luther King Jr. Day and days after what would have been Dr. King's 82nd birthday, students who chose to serve their community on a federal holiday instead of sleeping in are the ones who understood King's message best.

"Make it a day on, not a day off" was this year's MLK Day slogan, and the message fits this campus.

King envisioned an America where our generation judged one another by content of character, not color.

After heated debate in the House of Student Representatives meeting, a bill that would have approved a revision of the Constitution of the Student Body did not pass Tuesday night.

The House's ad hoc committee proposed a change to the constitution that would have removed Programming Council as the body responsible for student programming. It would have replaced it with the new programming organization called theCrew, which formed in August.

TheCrew replaced Programming Council this fall as the primary event-planning group in on-campus events.

Gibbs reaches out to college students for support of health care bill

Published Jan 19, 2011

In an effort to gain support for the health care legislation passed last year, White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs hosted a college student conference call to discuss the importance of the Affordable Care Act for young Americans.

The Affordable Care Act, commonly known as Obamacare, will be up for repeal in a House vote Wednesday, he said.

Under the current act, young Americans have been allowed to stay on their parents' insurance until age 26. If the act is repealed, though, this new measure would go away, Gibbs said.

"These awards were made available through an anonymous donor," Steele said. Students could be awarded up to $500.

Students should bring back ‘Riff Ram’

Published Jan 18, 2011

As a 1990 TCU graduate and a current graduate student on campus, I am more proud now than I have ever been to be a Horned Frog. I had the great opportunity to be in Pasadena to watch TCU win the Rose Bowl, and celebrating our Rose Bowl championship with a crowd of fans in the Coliseum Sunday afternoon was exciting.

But something was missing at both events: I did not hear Riff Ram, the school's traditional cheer, at either event.

Flu cases on the rise

Published Jan 18, 2011

The number of flu cases on campus has risen, and the TCU Brown-Lupton Health Center is offering free flu vaccinations to all students.

Health Services Administrator Stacey Simpson said the increase of flu cases was not anything to worry about.

"It is just the winter. People come back from Christmas break with the germs, and it spreads." Simpson said.

Despite the fullness of the Health Center's waiting room, this year's flu season has been shaping up to be better than the 2009-2010 season, Simpson said.
