Frogs’ offense fails to bring runners home

Published Feb 27, 2011

TCU head baseball coach Jim Schlossnagle told his team that baseball is a very simple game that is very hard to play.

No. 4 TCU couldn't muster the offense to defeat No.12 Cal State-Fullerton in the Sunday rubber match at Lupton Stadium. The Titans defeated the Frogs 2-1 to win the weekend series.

The Frogs have received great pitching and solid defense over the past two days. The downside: the offense could not get the hits to drive runners in when they were in scoring position.

Schlossnagle said the Frogs must focus on the good from the weekend.

Frogs’ pitching is stellar, but offense needs to adjust

Published Feb 27, 2011

No. 4 TCU looked as if their offense was destined to be shutout for the first six innings in a 8-4 loss to No. 12 Cal State-Fullerton Saturday. Titans' pitcher Tyler Pill had Frog hitter off balance for most of the day.

However, TCU senior first baseman Joe Weik drew a walk to put runners on first and second with just one out. TCU scored twice, and again in the eighth inning as they threatened Cal State Fullerton's bullpen. Senior second baseman Jerome Pena doubled in a run to tie the game and advanced to third with just one out.

TCU is the lone squad among the five leaders not currently rated among the top-20 teams in the Golfweek/Sagarin national rankings. No. 7 LSU (-4), No. 20 Arkansas (-3) and No. 2 Florida (-2) round out the top 5.

Lobos defeat Frogs 80-70 in final home game

Published Feb 26, 2011

Head basketball coach Jim Christian said he just wants another win this season, and he'd play 20 more games this season even if he doesn't like to lose.

The Frogs were up by as much as five points in the second half of Senior Night--TCU's last home game of the season, but New Mexico extended the Frogs' losing streak to 12 games in an 80-70 victory at Daniel-Meyer Coliseum Saturday evening.

Frogs pitching keeps the heat off lackluster offense Saturday

Published Feb 26, 2011

Junior Kyle Winkler's curveball was nasty for 7 1/3 innings. When Winker allowed two runners on with one out in the eighth inning, TCU coach Jim Schlossnagle went to junior closer Erik Miller.

If Winkler's curveball was great, Miller's was better. The final five batters of the game barely made contact with Miller's pitches, and he stranded runners on second and third to end the eighth.

Miller pumped his fist and hopped off the mound as TCU held onto its 3-1 lead over No. 12 Cal State Fullerton. For Miller, 2011 has started just the way he would have liked.
