When two university students founded the TCU Energy Club in March 2008, they never envisioned the group would grow to include hundreds of members and have access to leaders in the industry.

Justin LaPoten, a junior finance major and energy in technology and management minor, said that since the club started two years ago with about eight members, it has experienced tremendous growth, thanks to its relationship with the TCU Energy Institute. There are currently more than 350 students who pay $50 a semester to participate in the club, LaPoten said.

Following a pair of e-mail hacking attempts in January and February, knowledge of possible scamming tactics could help prevent students from becoming bait for online phishers, a representative for Information Security Services said.

A referendum for a proposed increase in the student body fee conducted by Student Government Association produced a small voter turnout. If students who didn't vote at this referendum later find the increase disagreeable, they do not have the right to complain.

Every vote counts, and it is important for students to remember that SGA's decisions are not made without regard to students' reservations. SGA gave the student body the opportunity to vote on the proposal, and returning students had the chance to advance or halt the proposal.

A student referendum achieved the required simple majority to move a proposal to raise the student body fee to the Board of Trustees, which will review it for final approval.

Of all eligible returning undergraduate students who chose to participate in the vote, 199 students - about 56 percent of the total 353 voters - favored the proposal to raise the student body fee from $24 to $45, said Marlon Figueroa, student body president.
