Lady Frogs beat UTSA Roadrunners

Published Nov 14, 2008

Sophomore guard Helena Sverrisdottir fell two assists shy of a triple-double as the Lady Frogs followed up Friday's 80-68 win over no. 3 Maryland with a 73-60 victory against UT-San Antonio on Sunday.

The Lady Frogs struggled to separate themselves from the Roadrunners on the scoreboard in the first half, but the team would take a 42-30 lead into halftime due to clutch outside shooting from junior guard TK LaFleur. Their advantage never dipped below double digits in the second half as the team improved to 2-0 on the season.

Laundry in dorms to be free starting fall 2009

Published Nov 14, 2008

Laundry isn't on the dollar menu anymore.

Starting in fall 2009, washers and dryers will be free to students living on campus, except those living in the Grand Marc or Leibrock Village, an apartment complex east of Sandage Avenue for full-time Brite students.

Craig Allen, director of Residential Services, said free laundry is beneficial because it will save the university money.

"There's a lot of wiring and equipment that we don't have to purchase in order to set laundry rooms up," Allen said.

Junior guard TK LaFleur, in her debut with the Lady Frogs, lit up the Terrapins for a career-high 28 points.

LaFleur said she didn't want to force anything in her debut and just wanted to let the game come to her. The showdown with the Terrapins is something she had been looking forward to for a while.

Mike McCracken, dean of the College of Science and Engineering, will step down at the end of this academic year after serving in that position for 27 years. McCracken said he had been thinking about retiring for the past two years and said he feels like doing something interesting with his life, like travelling, while he has no physical or health impediments.

"I am confident to leave," McCracken said. "The college is in great shape and will continue to function well."

Lifting the Lid

Students searching for a clean and traffic-free restroom on campus may not have to look very far.

When looking for a restroom, students tend to look for specific criteria before visiting the facilities. These are cleanliness, doors that close or lock properly, stalls that are fully stocked with toilet paper and an ample supply of paper towels. It is also important that the restrooms have several stalls to choose from in case there is a line. But of course, not having to deal with any lines is a plus.

Money not the only need of veteran-students

Published Nov 13, 2008

With sheer fortitude and patriotism, they enter the battlefield. Just out of high school or their initial years in college, they join the Army, Navy or the Air Force. Some years later, after the war is over or their terms have ended, these army personnel return to their normal lives. Many start reliving their lives and fulfilling the dreams they had sacrificed for the country. For many war veterans, going back to school and getting their degrees has become a major goal to pursue.

Letter to the Editor: University should observe Veteran’s Day holiday

Published Nov 13, 2008

I write this letter as a concerned TCU student. Recently, I chose to write an argumentative essay on why schools should not have class on Veterans Day. Instead, we should observe such a day just as we observe any other holiday.

As I walked to class, I was interested to see what TCU had done to honor our veterans. What did I see? Nothing. No flags at half-staff, and no flags decorating campus. As I picked up my copy of the Skiff, like I do every day, I was expecting to see something patriotic, but there was nothing.

After its 12-7 win against South Carolina on Oct. 26, the equestrian team heads to College Station to face No. 3 Texas A&M on Friday.

Head coach Gary Reynolds said the win against the Gamecocks was beneficial for the younger riders.

"South Carolina really gave our hunt seat riders some confidence," Reynolds said in an e-mail. "They are basically all freshmen and sophomores, so they are still young."

Hunt seat riding is the type of riding typically found in horse shows and is based off of fox hunting traditions.

University recommends 8 to 10 percent budget cut

Published Nov 13, 2008

The university will recommend an across-the-board budget cut of 8 to 10 percent for the next academic school year to the Board of Trustees on Friday in response to the country's economic situation, a university official said.

Brian Gutierrez, vice chancellor for finance and administration, said if accepted, the budget cut would be approved during the spring trustees meeting and save the university about $1.6 million.

Chancellor Victor Boschini said university officials want to make sure the university is prepared for next year.
