Soccer team remains undefeated

Published Aug 29, 2008

The soccer team remained undefeated and with no goals against after a 3-0 win over the Xavier Musketeers.

Another two goal performance from freshman Jordan Calhoun lifted the Frogs to their second victory in as many games. Calhoun's first goal came unassisted in the 17th minute beginning the Frog's scoring. She netted her second goal with two seconds remaining in the half off a hard return header into the box from freshman Alex Mechalske. A swift chip into the bottom left corner put the Frogs up 2-0 going into the half.

In a non-conference match in the Nike/Molten Invitational, the Horned Frogs utilized a strong front row attack and accurate passing to sweep the Lady Techsters 25-18, 25-21, 25-15 and open the season with a win.

After falling behind 5-0 in the first game, the Frogs got it together and cruised through the second and third games, tightening their passing and hitting along the way.

Junior Lauren Otto imposed her will from the left side to the tune of 14 kills and senior Devon Kirk pounded 9 kills from the middle.

Soccer team hopes to add two wins this weekend

After an impressive start to the season with a 5-0 victory over Stephen F. Austin State University on Aug. 22, the soccer team marches on with two home games this weekend.

Although not much is known about this weekend's opponents, head coach Dan Abdalla said his team can expect quite a challenge.

"We know they're both going to be very well-coached, hard-working teams, so they are both going to be games where we have to make sure we bring our top-level game," Abdalla said.

Clinton’s convention speech effective in unifying Party

Published Aug 29, 2008

Hillary Clinton's Tuesday night speech at the Democratic National Convention in Denver was as effective as her gaudy, orange pant-suit. It kept my attention, served its purpose and was aesthetically disturbing.

It all began with a stunning video homage to the former first lady's life work followed by a heartfelt introduction by daughter Chelsea Clinton, whom I actually had the opportunity to speak with when she came to campus last semester.

New Maxima SV not as sporty as advertised

Published Aug 29, 2008

The 2009 Nissan Maxima SV is advertised by Nissan USA as the return to Nissan's past, with the reinvention of its four-door sports car concept. This is a much needed change as the past few editions of the model have simply been large, soft and alloy Altimas. This was Nissan's shot at fixing this problem, and it has still missed the mark. I could sit here and ramble on about the features it has or needs, but, really, the problem is simple.

First female black Brite graduate dies at 97

Published Aug 28, 2008

The civil rights movement of the 1950s and 60s produced many noteworthy religious leaders in the black community, and Fort Worth residents are mourning the loss of one of their own.

Vada Phillips-Felder, who was the first black female graduate of the Brite Divinity School in 1954, died this summer at 97 after spending most of her life giving back to the community.

Phillips-Felder was an elementary school teacher and then a pastor's wife before she became a widow in her early fifties.

McCain unlikely to grasp conservative vote

Published Aug 28, 2008

In recent history, the support of evangelical Christian voters has been more important to the Republican Party than ever. Without it, George Bush would likely have lost the 2000 and 2004 elections. These days, it's hard for a Republican to get elected without strongly opposing abortion, same-sex marriage and gun control. But during a recession under one of the most unpopular Republican presidents in history, John McCain has quite a mountain to climb to become a candidate that conservatives will really want to rally behind.
